save as quicktime movie, so i suppose this is virtually useless unless you have quicktime pro? or is there a workaround?

I'd forgotten about that requirement ... I think there may be a workaround, but I'll have to look into them and post back later this week.
My bad for not recalling the Pro requirement.

Not your bad. Pro is a bargain. Having Apple software is good. The tutorials are free. I don't understand the drive to do non-Apple work-arounds unless it's a game to stick it to the Man. It's good to pay to play.

Any useful and reasonably easy intro to Automator is most welcome. In this specific case, would it be easier to use Name Mangler or similar utility?

For those seeking in-depth, affordable tutorials (<$50) on Adobe products, check out: http://designprovideo.com/
This company (also known as macProVideo) has been featured in Macworld once or twice before, I believe. Some quality products.

While Automater seems like a modern solution, I simply copied the text of the movie title from the web page and pasted in the Save As box for the QuickTime movie.
To speed things up a bit, I started loading the next movie (or 2 or 3) in a separate tab, then leap frogged back and forth from loading to saving.
Done in 45 minutes, no Automater scripting.
