Office 2004 hangs for no reason

On both my Macbook and MacMini (both w/ Leopard), either Excel or Word (Office for Mac 2004) will mysteriously hang if left unattended for any length of time. To quit either, it requires a "force quit." Whichever is the problem app is marked "unresponsive." On my Macbook, by this time the fan is working like crazy and the activity monitor indicates full cpu usage.
This has only recently started (last month)
Anybody have any ideas what's going on?
