I am trying to use Airport Extreme with a partitioned USB hard drive as a Time Machine backup. A MacBook will backup with Time Machine to this hard drive, no problem.

An Intel iMac will not back up to its dedicated partition? The Airport Extreme partition is about twice the size of the iMac drive. The iMac is connected via ethernet. The partitions are visible in Time Machines "Change Disk" menu but TM just spins its arrow.

Any thoughts?

Here is some info from Apple's support page.

Back up the whole family.
The moment you choose a Time Machine drive, a single folder is created on the drive. Inside this folder is a subfolder for each Mac being backed up. (Yes, multiple Mac systems can share the same backup drive.) And within each subfolder is another list of folders ? one for every backup performed on that Mac. Time Machine uses a standard file system to store all of its information. Nothing hidden anywhere.

This suggests that the AirPort Extreme hard drive should have only one partition for all the Intel Mac computers for the TM backup? My approach is to have separate partitions for each computer.
