Now I haven't used it so I can't say whether or not I like it, but from the sounds of this article, its something I'm not gonna be too keen about.

I dunno, rather then speculating, download and see:

I've been using Quicken on my Macs since the early 1990s. Right now I'm using the 2004 version. It works fine for my needs (which are very basic). I'm currently using a MacBook, but am concerned that at some point Q2004 won't work on whatever new version Mac I buy. I'm not sure whether to buy the latest version of Quicken, import all my old files and hope it works for a few more years, or go with some other program like iBank. Being able to import my Quicken 2004 files into whatever I move to is critical. Any recommendations?

I've been using Quicken from back in DOS.

If we're keeping score, I've used it back in the Apple 2 days. ;-)

There's no better metaphor for a checkbook register than a checkbook register. Hey, it isn't even a metaphor, it IS a checkbook register.

I'll try to be open minded about the new interface, but I would tend to agree with what you're saying. I need my registers, that's the point of the program for me.

Don't kill the usefulness of my Quicken. Please?

I don't mind if they change the program's interface, rewrite it for Cocoa, etc. These are all good things. But, as you say, if it takes a step back in functionality, I may have to consider alternatives like iBank, etc.

OK, I downloaded the beta last night (and even provided the link earlier in the comments) and what do you know - registers are there!

They are basic, but they are there. The beta appears to be open again - I would encourage folks to give it a spin. I am a little disconcerted that it appears to be pretty basic - I was hoping they would be further along by now (hopefully they are holding back features for a launch surprise). But right now, I am very pleased with the way the interface is heading - it looks much cleaner and simpler than the traditional Quicken interface and I look forward to seeing where the product ends up.

I figured I'd see how ol' Quickbook for Mac was doing, found a newer (2009) version then the last demo I looked over last year. I'm happy to see they do have quick direct banking downloads now and my banks are supported. But there is NO online bill pay and you can't transfer between accounts electronically. Holy cow, Quicken 2007 does both, how can the high end product not?

Too bad, I could (may) jump ship from Quicken or this newer product to Quickbooks if I can live without the above functionality. Worse, I was told by a very helpful support tech that this is available functionality on the Windows version.

Thank you for an honest assessment of Quicken Financial Life for Mac -soon to be released program. I have been a beta tester since the last half of December. I have used Quicken for Windows for over 15 years and Money 2008 for the last two years. I do not work for Quicken or MacWorld.
We cannot realistically expect the new Quicken for Mac (FL) to be an up-dated version of what we have used in the past. I know that I don't want a new OLD program - for the most part.
The entire point of the magazine's review of the bata FL is that it is a different program and there are some interesting looking improvements coming in the summer 2009 release that we may want to use.
I may be 62 years old but I don't expect new things to be like they always have been. Think outside the box and let yourself accept a new way to do something that may be better. Give the program a real chance.
It is not fair to condemn the program or Intuit based on a beta version. We were told that this was not a finished product and that some parts of the program would not be functional. They also recommended we ran our usual financial program for all our actual bill paying and accounting needs that were important.
As a new Mac owner - I am excited that there will be a brand-new Quicken version for the Leopard OS. I changed from 20 years on a Windows machine to a Mac in December. When I found out about Quicken's new program - I was thrilled that they were building an entirely new program just for this new operating system.
New computer, new operating system, and just in time - a new Quicken that may allow on-line bill pay and check printing along with the usual financial tools we have come to expect from our Windows OS programs.
Thank you Intuit! I remain - patiently awaiting the Summer of 2009 for more than just warmer weather!!

The current QMac has no provision for saving one's work in the midst of
a session. NONE! This can (and has) led to tragic loss of data.
And one can only agree that Intuit has treated Mac users with great disdain
over the years. I echo the comment that I am appalled at the lack of attention to our platform vis-a-vis what is available for the PC. I am not enthused about the potential for the new software. As Mom said, "We'll see." And she usually meant "No!"

If you are talking about the Quicken 2007 version for Mac - that, according to Amazon.com purchasers, is supposed to be a very unimpressive version of any Quicken for Windows version ever produced.

This is the reason many Apple computer owners have been so upset. Intuit has not addressed Mac owners needs with an honest to goodness effective for Mac financial software equivalent program.

This new program, Quicken Financial Life for Mac is not available for purchase yet. You can only get a beta version on-line from Intuit. That version is free and is only a "test" version.

Are you perhaps, addressing the faults of Quicken for Mac 2007 or 2006 and not QFL for Mac?

I apologize for not being specific. I was referring to Quicken 2007 for Mac.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I finally got my paws on the beta and I am bitterly disappointed, especially because yeah, it'll probably sell for $99. I'm supposed to track my spending with a freaking tag cloud?! No thank you to blurry, unresponsive cover flow too.

There is a program I read about in ML (Mac Life) page 34 Mar -09 issue -- that mentioned "CrossOver" which can be downloaded for a free 30 day try out.
The beauty of CrossOver is it can run SOME Windows programs on your Mac 10.4 and up system without needing an installed version of Windows XP/Vista.
CrossOver's web site has many high customer ratings of its effectiveness in running Quicken for Windows 2007 without problems. I have not tried it yet though perhaps as frustration grows and Beta reviews of QFL for Mac dwindle - it may be a better possibility. The Quicken for Windows 2007 would offer more tasks we want than the Quicken for Mac 2007??
There may be newer versions of Quicken for Windows that will work well with CrossOver - I have not yet found that information on the Net yet. There are 2 or 3 versions of CrossOver available for Mac use - I just looked at the more basic (and less expensive) version.
Any one want to try it?

Okay I downloaded a trial version this morning of CrossOver and did the install. Then I followed their directions and installed a 2007 Version of Quicken for Windows (from the CD I had saved from my Windows PC days).

IT ALL WORKED beautifully and perfectly. I was able to download my 90 checking history from two local banks (TD Bank North and KeyBank).

Then I went on-line and used the familiar "on-line bill pay" and scheduled payments for an upcoming car loan, an electric bill, and a monthly contribution to my local Church.

Next it is credit card info which should not be a problem.

Whenever QFL for Mac is released - I'll check it out and if I like it, I'll transfer my Quicken information to it. If the new, long awaited program is a disappointment - I still have what I am doing now with Quicken 2007 for Windows on my Mac Pro machine (which is 200% better than what I have been doing up until today).

Quicken runs a bit slower - a lag in switching from one window to the next but that is a small price to pay! I feel like a person who can fully function again.
