how do i get 1 g4 mac with os x, 1 g3 mac with os 9.2.2 and 1 pc with win98 to share internet acccess on a router with a cable modem? do i have to set anything in the control panels or does it get configurated automatically? I think my cable company said that they use dynamic ip. I 'm probably gonna get a linksys router. I haven't got the broadband service yet but i need to figure this out , 'cause i getting it in 3 weeks. somebody ...help! All the equipment you list will work fine with a cable internet connection shared by a Linksys router.

The manual that comes with the Linksys router provides very detailed instructions for setting up Windows, and for configuring the router itself.

Setting up MacOS 9.x: the only configuration required is to the TCP/IP control panel. Set it to obtain a connection via "ethernet built in" and to obtain an IP address using DHCP.

Setting up MacOS 10.x: the only configuration required is in System Preferences -> Network. Again, configure TCP/IP to obtain a connection via "ethernet built in" and to obtain an IP address using DHCP.

Macgallant,
I had a nearly identical situation. And, like you, I was asking quesions prior to getting the broadband--should I go wireless or wired? What is the diff. between hubs and routers, etc.

With the help of this forum(esp. HMB) I, and my two kids are seamlessly sharing broadband! I'm a novice and it was actually very easy.

BTW, I bought an Asante router for $50 after rebate. Id read that Asante works well with Macs(and cross platforms like ours). Their literature and website always include references to Macs. Follow HMBs instructions and its just plug-and-play. Doing your own networking using DHCP may save you an additional monthly charge ($10 for me) if you were to have your provider doing the networking.

One more thing. I did a wired network. I know wireless is the rage these days but I have some thick, plaster walls which might have interfered with the signal. Furthermore, Im told that wired is more reliable and possibly faster. With advice and encouragement here I made my own ethernet (aka Cat 5) cables. Its a little tedious and exacting but it worked just as I was promised. Your physical situation will dictate your options. I was able to go through our attic and then into the kids closets; hiding the cable for the most part. Got all the stuff from Home Depot and saved $.

Its nice when things work out! Good luck.
ps. Thanks HMB

My question is similar, but i will be networking an ibook, an imac, and a pc laptop through the airport and then to a cable modem. I know the macs will both be able to use the airport and modem and share files because i have seen it done with someone else's setup.

My questions are about the pc la[top as follows:
1. I don't have a wireless card for the pc, so I will run an ethernet cable from the PC to the Airport base station (Snow). Will htat successfully connect the pc to the airport, or do i need some other software on my pc to do this?
2. Will my pc share files, printers with the macs on my network as smoothly as the macs do, or will i need Dave or some other type of software to accomplish this? How do the pc running windows 98 recognize the airport network and use it?
Thank you,
Mitchellfox@access4less.net
