preventing a volume form auto-mounting

In the pre-OSX era, the ability to control whether a volume would mount at start-up was available. I cannot find this same capability in 10.5.6. What can I do to manage whether or not I want a particular volume to mount on the desktop. FINDER preferences only deals in generalities, i.e. DEVICES>HARD DRIVES, but not in specific hard drives/volumes.
