Telenor to become second Scandinavian iPhone provider

I never understood why Apple picked/endorsed/whatever Telia to be the provider in Denmark. They still, 6 months later, only cover about 15% of Denmark with 3G (and their rollout-plans are going REALLY slow!), while Hi3G (another inter-european provider) cover 99,9%!
And, yeah. We have a lot in Scandinavia you don't got in the US :D - like a service plan being maximum 6 months - by law.

Why the heck can't we (in the Land of the Free) get more than one provider? Not only do I hate being bound to ATT, but I think it really gives support to iPhone competitors with other networks.
Does Apple want other manufactures to keep working on iPhone replacements because consumers who can't/won't use ATT want an iPhone?
If Apple made the iPhone available unlocked who would buy an Android or MS Mobile? Very few.
Let me select my phone and my provider.

Even being an Apple fanboy, I would still seriously consider an Android phone (although, the G1 is hidious!). Using Gmail and a long array of other Google services, and the fact that Android is open, userfriendly and not an eye-soar such as WinMO and Symbian, makes it very attractive. It only needs some nice designed handsets, and far better availability..
