iMac doesn't recognize iPod's existence--why not?

I have a G5 iMac and a second-generation iPod nano, and until recently all was hunky-dory. However, now when I connect the nano to the iMac, the iMac doesn't recognize that it's there. The nano charges normally, but no sync is performed. In all other respects, everything seems to be working normally, both on the iPod and on the iMac. Can anybody give me an idea as to what might have happened and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance.

Technical minutiae: 20-inch G5 iMac running 10.4.11, iTunes 8, iPod nano with firmware 1.1.3.

If you open Disk Utility, does it 'see' the iPod?

Does your HD show on your desktop?

Bob.

No and yes. No, Disk Utility doesn't see the iPod, but yes, the hard disk is on the desktop. Any ideas?

Based on your answers, you have a different problem than I was thinking.

The only idea I have is to plug your iPod into a different Mac and see if it's recognized there. Or, plug a different iPod into your Mac and see if it shows up.

Bob.

Thanks. I'll give it a whirl. Anybody else got any suggestions?

Thanks, sandbag1. I'm not at home, where the iMac in question lives, so I can't say for sure that you've solved my problem, but I'm confident enough that you have that I've credited you with the "correct answer."
