My major issue with the App Store reviews is that they are country specific. This is a real problem for countries with a smaller population/iPhone user base, such as Australia, since there just aren't enough reviews for most apps to get a balanced opinion.
The other day I was interested in an iPhone game that had been out for about a week. There no reviews on it in the Australian App Store. Fortunately I have a US iTunes account as well, so I logged into that. There were four one-star highly negative reviews warning against the app, all of them giving valid reasons why. If I hadn't seen those reviews I would probably have taken the plunge and bought the app. As it was, luckily, I didn't.
The reviews should be universal, like eBay feedback.

The new filtering by version is a step forward.
But when browsing by category, we still need more than "Most Popular", which seems to really be "Most Downloaded", not "Highest Rated" -- so apps that many people download, rate 1 star, and delete seem to rate higher than apps downloaded by less people but rated consistently higher.
Same for searches -- search for a phrase with may hits, and there's no ability to sort at all.
