Hi all,

This sounds like an easy task but as much as I tried I could not figure out how to do this...

Some background, I recently took a sailing trip around the cap horn in South America. My camera does not have GPS embedded. I have most of my coordinates in my logbook and would now like to manually enter some of the more memorable sites. I tried to click on the photos information tag, click on enter photo location, then new place. I get the google maps screen where I can enter names "Paris" but when I try to enter coordinates it doesn't seem to find them... This seems bizarre and I guess I'm doing something wrong since iphoto 09 can recognize the coordinates, which are already embedded.

Any help is much appreciated..

Thanks,

Phillyman

PS: I would prefer to enter this information in iPhoto so that it is correctly added to the metadata of the photos. If this is not possible, how could I manually edit the metadata (coordinates field) of the pictures?

HI all,

well, either I'm the only one with this issue or you all have new cameras ;-)

I did find this thread at apple discussions.
For all the lazy readers out there... It seems Apple did this on purpose and it is NOT possible. Weird? I certainly think so and wrote to Apple.

As for now, no solution! If someone does have an idea, please post!

Cheers,
Phillyman

It appears it can be done...just not within iPhoto, which is what I would expect. It is possible Apple might add that ability to iPhoto in the future, but keep in mind that this is a "first generation" of new feature for iPhoto (which is a basic level consumer program). Future generations/implementations of the feature might enhance it. Basically, Apple just added the ability for iPhoto to take advantage of information supplied in the photo file by the camera.

I suspect you can or will be able to find utilities that will be able to edit/add this information on photo files prior to importing them into iPhoto. While this would be an "inelegant" process, it would work.

And like it or not, Apple can never satisfy EVERYONE with features that they want each time they release new versions of software or hardware. Some people are always going to feel disappointed.

Speaking of utilities, you might see if this one might work...note that it appears that you must do it in the Terminal:

EXIFTool is a command line utility for edittign all kinds of metadata for photos (i.e. more than just GPS entries). There is a GUI interface app for it on Windoze, but I don't know if there is one for the Mac.

Here are some other things to take a look at to see if they might work (they are utilities for specifically adding GPS data to photos):

Hi Smax,

First of all thank you for your long and informative post. I was just about to add the same information/applications. You also make a compelling case for how the feature were implemented. I partly agree that Apple can never satisfy everyone but at the same time I am surprised that this option was not allowed. It seems like a lot of nature pictures are also being blocked from being correctly tagged. It is version 1.0 of this feature so it still might come and probably will down the road...

At least we did find alternatives (cumbersome they may be) but again thanks for the research and assistance.
Will see down the road what Apple decides ;-)
