Maybe this announcement will finally shut up the phone geeks who have been whining about MMS since version 1, so we can finally talk about useful features.
I mean, seriously. No one I know uses MMS. No one in my family has even HEARD of MMS. None of my friends use it. No one in my circle of acquaintances uses it. NO ONE.
Ordinarily I wouldn't even care about it, but the issue has generated an inordinate amount of internet wangst, punditocracy pontification, etc. that issues I do care about have been getting shoved into the background. Right now, I'm just glad it's over.

Many American's do not know how to use many things, many American's (97%) do not use or know how to use utensils properly, can't hold a fork and a knife in a proper manner..... so it is no surprize that "NO ONE" uses MMS. MMS is a great feature and I missed it since I switched to iPhone 10 months ago. However all of this talks to me right now are complete waste of time since 3.0 iss not to show up for another 3 months at least.

My only gripe with all of these updates and the fact that Apple, along with most people, are making a huge deal about this update. Don't get me wrong, it's packed with many features. I am glad to have these updates. But the thing is, a majority of these features should have came with the phone from day 1. Just like when the 3G phone came out. It was a huge deal that Apple released a new phone....but the only major difference from the original was that it had 3G (as well as subsidized price through AT&T). If Apple just came out with 3G on the original...there wouldn't have been this craze last June. It seems like most of us are too excited over things that, technologically speaking, should have and could have been instated with the original....instead we have to wait nearly 2 years for basic features

yeah I agree...I hate when apple announces updates or new devices...gets everyone excited about them...picturing all the things we will be able to use these features for....then slaps us with a 3-month minimum delay before we get our hands on it....very anti-climatic. How nice would it have been to be able to log on to itunes just after the announcement was finished and be greeted by a update prompt for the 3.0 software. I guess I'm too into instant gratification. I'm sure I'm not alone on this one.

I wish Apple would have clarified why the hardware of the original iPhone cannot support MMS and stereo Bluetooth... or if this is just a limitation they are implementing in software to drive sales of the iPhone 3G.
Apple did clarify in the following Q&A. To paraphrase, "It's a different radio."

These updates are something they easily could have implemented on the release of the original iPhone.
It's cool they finally did it, but now the iPhone is just up to the standards it should have met 2 years ago.
Just my 2 cents...
I am definitely excited about cut/paste and landscape mode. The fact that 1st gen iPhones don't support MMS is BS. I've been able to send MMS messages with all my phones the past 5 years (or more) up until the iPhone... Lame......
I'm holding out until a new iPhone is released with removable storage, significantly better battery life, more reliable 3g network connection, and a better quality/more functional camera.

Why no full love for the original iPhone??? I like my original and want to keep it as long as possible...but just like when apple switched over to intel...fewer and fewer things are compatible with the older PPC. --Chief10
I am still happily using my 12" G4 Powerbook alongside my Intel-powered iMac and don't feel deprived in the slightest. I'm amazed at how well my trusty G4 runs everything I install on it, even Photoshop. Even with only 1.25GB of RAM, which is the max for this model. There are certainly programs that won't run... iMovie '09, for example. But this is news? Personally, I'm grateful that it still runs so well, not bitter because it can't run absolutely everything that comes down the pike.
The same applies to my original iPhone. I totally love it and don't feel the least bit deprived. Even without genuine GPS, most location-based apps work flawlessly. I'm a happy camper, and so is everyone else I know who owns an original iPhone.

Hypothetical coding is easier than actually producing the code. It's easy for us to sit here and say it would have been "easy" to implement this or that. Maybe not. The comments about copy/paste, for example, suggest that it's harder than it sounds.

You knew there wasn't MMS, and yet it sounds like you bought one anyway. Lame or not, MMS wasn't a deal breaker for you.

And I want a 3 ounce laptop that's the size of a Moleskine notebook in my pocket but the size of two 30" Apple Cinema Displays when it's on my desk. If I wait long enough, I'm sure I can have it. In the intervening years, I'm going to buy the product that best meets my needs at the time I need it. :)

MMS is not a limitation of iphone hardware or the service provided by AT&T. This is Apple locking people out. MMS works fine with SwirlyMMS on a jailbroken iphone with the standard contract. I know, I've done it, used it, it works like a charm.
But...it seems that 2.2.1 has not been fully jailbroken as iphoto will not pull images from a jailbroken phone now so that's a pain in the backside. But it could be something in iphoto 8 Might have to bite the bullet and upgrade finally :)
