Of course pure speculation but consider the following:

They said the software upgrade will be available this Summer. Apple's tradition so far is to relaese a new iPhone at the beginning of Summer. It would make sense that a new version of the hardware will come out by end of June and have 3.0 software on it pre-loaded and once it goes on sale, the software upgrade will be available to everyone.

Also, it looks like AT&T will be selling unlocked iPhones without any contract starting in about a week- that may be an attempt to help get rid of existing inventory and make way for the new version of the phone.

of course they will. customers have cell phone ADD and the mobile hardware business moves at a very fast pace to keep up. for one, if they don't update then the iphone will start to get stale and sales will drop because customers will wait for the next version. and secondly first version iphone customer's 2 year contracts will start to end this summer. those customers (me included) aren't going to buy the current version because we could have upgraded already.

BUT this event was an iPhone 3.0 OS event and not an iphone hardware event.

Of course they will. But that's another story.

What's significant about the new iPhone OS is that it will further leverage the synergistic power of the whole Apple ecosystem, much of it leapfrogging the competition with respect to the core system and with respect to the broad array of applications.

I think Apple took the correct strategy with push notification over background apps given the current state of processor and battery power. I think it's the best compromise.

I'd love to find out some day just how much hand wringing the competition is doing over Apple's iPhone successes, recognizing either the sheer magnitude of effort it would take to somehow outdo Apple, and/or recognizing the sheer futility of such an endeavor.

I don't think there's any doubt there will be new hardware this Summer. That's when the 2-year contracts of the first wave of iPhone buyers comes up. Apple needs to have a new offering for them. If you waited in line on day one for an iPhone you are not going to be excited to buy an iPhone 3G a year after it was released (unless you got one of those on day one as well).
However, the hardware could be a simple refresh with upped specs or it could have some cool new features. I'd hope they hit a couple more feature requests like adding a better camera.

While there are many great additions with 3.0, the one thing I was really looking for as an end user was some sort of folders, or other way of better organizing several pages of apps. Despite predictions of this appearing in 3.0 (and I know there's a good version of this for jailbroken iPhones), nothing has been mentioned.

If apple DOES indeed come out with a new iphone they have to improve capacity, speed, memory, and the camera. Other then improve the performance of the overall iphone I don't expect major hardware changes to the device. I think it will be a refresh, but it won't be with people standing in lines .
I suspect it will be very much like when they released the 16GB iphone (as opposed to the original 4 or 8)

Do you see any aspects of iPhone SDK 3.0 that can be viewed as a harbinger or larger and even more capable mobile devices? Something with a 10" screen?

Why no task syncing with iCal? That's more important that syncing notes. Tasks on iCal is important because it syncs with Tasks in Apple Mail at a system level. But because it cannot sync with tasks in the iPhone, it makes it next to useless. I mean, what's the point of creating tasks in iCal and Apple Mail, and tasks on iPhone if they cannot synchronize?

But what did Rob Enderle say? An article like this is not complete without a look at his jackassery.

It was a Preview event, not a launch event. Just because it wasn't shown doesn't automatically mean it isn't coming. Maybe task synching will be possible, maybe it won't. Just don't judge this Preview as being the be all and end all of everything that will be in OS 3.

Appigo's ToDo app syncs with iCal tasks.

It's also customizable such that it can function anywhere from a simple task list to a full GTD implementation of any stripe, provided the user spent the minutes required to define the fields as desired. Personally, I much prefer that to a "one size fits all" implementation.

About the only thing that would make it more perfect for my needs would be automatic syncing when iCal and Address Book are synced.
