sony handycam.

I got my sony handycam and I tried to upload my movies onto my computer but it wont open with imovie. Is there any other program that I need to download in order for this to work? I've tried to click and drag the movies to my desktop and to imovie but it just wont import right. Any suggestions? Thanks.
