Photos taken with my iPhone 3G built-in camera are automatically geotagged. When imported into iPhoto 09, the "Places" feature uses this data just as you would expect it to. I want to automatically geotag photos taken with a standalone digital camera. Since my standalone camera does not have built-in GPS, what are my options? Is there an iPhone app that logs location data?

Yes, there is. It's called GeoLogTag and it works very good. I'm using it for a couple of months now and I'm very happy with it.

It costs $5 and that's a fair price since it has a nice and simple UI, it's very stable and it does exactly what you expect it to do.

GeoTagLog is an excellent app! Downloaded and installed it this afternoon. I had to open a Flickr account to check out the geotagging process. The ride was a little bumpy a first but I figured it out. This is a solution that is going to work for me.

Do you know if there is a plugin for iPhoto 09 that allows me to import the .GPX file directly to iPhoto rather than using Flickr? That would be the perfect solution for me. I'm slowly getting on board with this "cloud computing" paradigm, but I still like working with my files locally.

I don't know of a way to import a GPX file in iPhoto, but you can use the free geotagging app GPSPhotoLinker before you import your photos in iPhoto 09. Another very good geotagging app for Mac is HoudahGeo ($30).

It is important that you do the geotagging BEFORE you import your photos in iPhoto 09. You can use Image Capture for that.

If anyone else knows of a plugin for iPhoto 09 to import GPX files, please post it. It would simplify my geotagging workflow even more.

The latest version of GeoLogTag geotags photos in a Mac folder. WiFi is a requirement, but it works very good. It greatly simplifies my geotagging workflow. This is really (as the website states) an all-in-one geotagging solution for Mac users, especially if you manage your photos with iPhoto 09 (Places).
