A brief addition/comment: Rather than a FireWire 800-to-400 cable, a cheaper and perhaps more convenient alternative is an 800-to-400 plug-in adapter, such as the one from SIIG that I bought on Amazon.

I bought my first Mac - my 17" MBP - in Fall of 2006. I was told newer models would be coming out in a month or so, but after borrowing a friend's MBP and playing with it all night long, I could not wait for my own. I am writing because mine must be - if I read the support groups correctly - the ONLY MBP model on the planet that doesn't have exploding batteries, fraying AC power cords, keyboard problems, screen problems, updating problems, nor any of the problems mentioned in this article. It's been a wonderful experience these past couple of years.

Be warned, if you use the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT chip in the new 15" you will likely experience complete system lockups from time to time especially if you play games. It seems like the machine gets too hot and the fans can't adequately cool it. Apple is aware of the problem and is "looking into a solution". Until then running the SMC fan control utility helps but its not a guaranteed fix.

What about getting an update to fix the last battery performance update? The battery update has caused several customers to post over 16 pages on their Apple Discussion forum of MacBooks from 2007 to current models shutting down at 75% battery life. There is no warning and the MacBook doesn't go into sleep mode so any work being done is lost. Apple is only swapping batteries with under 300 cycles even though customers would possibly exceed 300 cycles due to needing to continually plug in the power adapter to avoid the crash. I fit into the second lot where my battery went just over 300 cycles for my late 2007 MacBook Pro and told the battery is a consumable product thus not part of the 3 year Apple Care warranty and would need to pay to replace the battery. Prior to the update my battery performance was between 4 to 5 hours and now it's between 1 to 2 hours.

How about the annoying DVD drive problem, where the drive fails to mount DVDs, though it seems capable of reading CDs. Most notably discussed here: http://discussions.a...hreadID=1295681, but with no solution offered for the Hitachi-LG drives.
This is the only problem I've ever had with my MBP, and now I have a stack of burned archives I can no longer access via the drive.

I purchased a matte screen pre-unibody 2008 model 15.4" MacBook Pro in Sept 08 and aside from one demo software induced lockup it has been faultless. No fraying adapter flex, nada. Just a great user experience with heavy daily use plus Logic studio.

However, Apple's move to an Nvidia chipset seemed poorly judged (perhaps financially motivated) as Nvidia chipset motherboards in the PC arena are well known for running significantly hotter than an equivalent performance Intel chipset. Just what you don't want in a laptop! Such issues are meekly evaluated in UK Macworld no doubt due to Apple's whip hand and its ability to veto journalists who don't toe the line. US Macworld seems less cowed.

Is there a solution to the problems caused by users putting MacBooks to sleep while a shutdown script is running?
My son did this with his new MacBook - closing the lid immediately after selecting Shutdown, without waiting for the script to complete. He lost all sound output.
Now - after reformatting an old PC USB drive, backing up his hard drive, doing an Archive-and-Install, then downloading all the updates since his system DVD - he has learnt his lesson.
But surely Apple should have made the shutdown script uninterruptable, even by lid closure?
Is there a Terminal hack to achieve this?

Hi,
I have MacWord 2008 installed. Suddenly, yesterday, whenever I boot up my Macbook Pro, word starts up!

Can anyone help? Truly annoying. I have NO idea how this happened, and no idea how to stop it.

Thanks!

This is months later, and I hope you've solved your problem, but if not check word in the Dock and see if it accidentally has been set (Options) to "Open at Log-In".

My Mac IBook chimes when I turn it on- stays dark but when I move the screen back and forth the screen will come for several seconds. What can I do to fix it?
