Skype for iPhone arrives

The Skype app is free. Nobody said that using it will cost nothing.
Eventually, I would expect that one will need a Skype Account ($30 year) to obtain a Skype-To-Go number to make a cell phone call to a landline or cell phone. This is no different than Skying from your computer to landline or cell phone. As such, everytime you use Skype or receive a call, the time will be charged against your regular calling plan.
Otherwise, using Skype via Wi-Fi is free but you can only call other Skype users and can only be heard if the Skype app is running on their iPhone at the same time.

Doesn't everyone use Skype on their computer at home anyway?
Actually, outside of the geek community and people traveling overseas, and for some of us within it, no.
I don't like being tethered to my screen, I don't like stamping out all the spam chats and calls that begin the second I sign in, and I've tried to figure out to no avail - from a very less than initutive help system - something as basic as what my Skype number or name or whatever ID we're supposed to tell people to Skype us at is.
There may be simple solutions to the last two, but I tire of going screen to screen to ferret them out, so although the basic act of calling is simple enough, I'm not impressed, and am well-served enough by my unlimited night-time cell minutes to have made about 3-4 Skype calls the last few years.
But still glad to see it show up for the resta' youse.
Another interesting take: www.nytimes.com/2009/03/30/technology/internet/30skype.html?th&emc=th
Side note: I understand that wi-fi calling T-Mobile users have to game the system as follows... ...if you start a call on wi-fi and leave the zone, you're switched seamlessly to the T-Mobile network and no minutes are counted, whatever the length of the call. Conversely, if you start a call on T-Mobile and go back into a wi-fi zone, T-Mobile will still bill you for the full length of the call. Ergo, those in the know ask their friends if they can call them right back when they enter a zone.
I have no idea if this is how the ATT/Skype thing will work, or if the T-Mobile users are even using Skype, or rather that T-Mobile is handling both wi-fi and cell calls.
Message was edited by: bigpics to add story link to NY Times article with info on how Apple/AT&T and other carriers are handling Skype services. Hint: Apple's method is different. Q'uell surprise.....

I've been using Skype on my iPod touch for months, via Fring. I will check this app out to see if it offers anything over Fring, but Fring supports SIP, MSN, and many others all in one package.
Fring also has horrible, horrible lag in North America due to the fact that they route all calls through their European servers--and they do it unsecured to boot.

Only available in the US?
No.
According to Skype, their mobile app is only available in a few countries right now.
Most likely Australia, Chile, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, United Kingdom and the USA, as posted on the Skype site. http://skype.com/allfeatures/togo/
For those outside of the US, it is worth getting a US Apple Gift Certificate. It works from Canada on Wi-Fi only.

I was disappointed to discover that the Skype application is not available through the iTunes Store (see CBC article at http://tr.im/i2zY for more information). It seems it's due to silly CRTC regulations which don't make any sense. Applications which support similar functionality to Skype (e.g. Fring and Truphone) are available in Canada...I don't see why Skype should be singled out.
It's probably just a matter of time before someone offers the app to jail broken phones, but I don't want it badly enough to go to this extreme.

Why don't you direct your concern at Skype?
In the meantime, just take a drive across the border and pick up an Apple Gift Certificate.

Thanks for your comments.
I posted my message for the benefit of Canadians who read this forum who might be wondering why Skype isn't showing up on the App Store (and for anyone else who's interested). It's actually the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission) that is blocking the app, not Skype, and I may send them a message.
Unfortunately it's not that simple. My account is tied to the Canadian iTunes Store and it's my understanding that I'd need a US address, IP address and credit card to access content from the US store.
