I wonder how long MicroSoft would have shrugged off the Mac vs. PC commercials if Apple had never directly targeted Vista. MS has gotten a wee bit touchy over that subject.

It doesn't matter... nothing to get in a tizzy over. Mac/PC is very common terminology when contrasting the two platforms against each other. Sometimes these nomenclatures enter so deeply into popular culture that most people aren't even aware of the true meaning from a conversational level.

A band-aid is an "adhesive bandage"... xerox is commonly used as a verb for "photocopy"... even though "calling a spade a spade" is not a racial slur, most people think it is. A Mac is a computer made by Apple, Inc. and a PC is a box that runs Microsoft Windows.

Alright. Alright.... fine, then.

I wanted people to stop stereotyping and generalizing but that's not going to happen.

Anyway.... back to the article.....

Oh, I like sarcasm fights.

And of course as we all know, it's the number of programs, not the quality, that matters. Because let's be honest, you can't have enough different kinds of solitaire games, am I right? Yeah, if you don't have at least 800,000 programs on your hard drive, your computer is completely worthless. Because it's all about how many programs you have.

And we definitely agree on viruses, I mean it just wouldn't be Windows if there weren't approx. 45,000 active viruses for it. That's what makes Windows so special! More is definitely better in this case.

You are missing a zero. ;)

But seriously, you are because the last time I saw malware numbers for Windows several years ago, it was pushing 200,000, so even adding the extra zero would be underestimating the threat to Windows.

Not to mention, as IT staff gets crunched due to whatever, there seems to be only on answer to most pc problems, Re-image.

Heard that one before. We'll reset all your preferences and kill all your printers and move all your files so you can spend just enough time getting it working the way you like and then its time to re-image again....

I'm sorry.

I had read and commented on "The Microsoft discount" article earlier and I'm afraid I still had some of that vinegar in me when commenting on this article. There really was nothing to get in a tizzy over. I ended up mixing things up in my mind a bit and saying things that only barely fit the subject matter of this article.

Apologies to all you guys and to Jon Seff.

I'm going to go stick my head in a pig as penance.

I'm always torn between my love of tinkering with PC hardware and my fondness of OSX. I'm really not a big fan of Apple hardware, I love the OS, but I'll love to be able to install it on my custom-built rig.

I don't see myself ever buying a mac. The price is crazy and why pay that much for something that wont play the games I want? I don't care much for these laptop ads. I would have never owned one if it wasn't for Netbooks.

People are seeing that Macs represent true value. Once you go Mac, you never go back willingly.

Guys, you know what's really funny? Most the comments here are about the OS, although the commercials we're talking about never mention the word "windows" - they are solely about hardware.
It's kinda strange that a software company starts an ad campaign to advertise the (IBM-compatible) PC platform. But, as someone said before, Apple kinda started that whole thing when attacking "PCs" in their campaign when really they were talking about the downsides of windows...
I personally am sick of all this. We are in the lucky position that numerous companies have a lot of product for different customer needs. We can evaluate our needs and then buy the product that suits them. Yes, I use a Mac and so does my wife (after a lot of coaxing), but I don't recommend it to everyone of my friends using myths and half-truths, like "Macs never crash whereas PCs crash all the time" or "PCs are cheaper than Macs". Both are utter nonsense and everyone with a little bit of brain and experience in both worlds knows that. Both platforms (= OS + the hardware it's available for) have advantages and disadvantages and we should be intelligent and mature enough to see them and base our (decisions and discussions) on these facts rather than would silly ad-campaign tell us.

Actually that is not true, some PC's can run Mac and Windows. They are made by Apple.

In fact, some PCs run Mac via a Hack. .. . . Ooooh! Ooooh! It rhymes!

I do agree with you though that PC means Personal Computer and should not refer to a Windows machine. It would be interesting to have Apple do a Mac-PC ad where Mac comes on and says "Hi I'm a PC" and take it from there.

Why would you want to run half the worlds software when one good application is enough?

VISTA was a disaster, but I've been playing with the Windows 7 beta and is it very very nice. Apple will need to do some great things to Snow Leopard if they are to stay ahead of Windows 7.

I've had more trouble with my Leopard installations than with any previous Mac operating system. The permissions with the ACL's seem to be constantly causing problems.
