So, did I miss something or when exactly will I be able to rent HD movies from iTunes (or Amazon) on my Mac Mini? If I have a DVI-D monitor with HDCP built-in, what is the problem? If I can buy HDTV programming (buy HD TV shows and HD movies)
on iTunes and Amazon, why can't I rent HD movies? What is taking so long? Do I really need to get a new Mac mini with Mini-Displayport to rent HD movies?
Shouldn't rentals come first? They could get viewers to buy movies they might be interested in, right?

I think you did miss something, or exactly, what is your definition of HD. You can rent HD movies from iTunes for quite some time. I know that it has been, at the very least, more then one year since this was implemented. I rend only HD if it is available on iTunes.

You are missing something, Apple wants you to buy an AppleTV. Read the fine print in the Read Me File for iTunes 8:
"HD movies from the iTunes Store are designed exclusively for Apple TV and may not be transferred to iTunes"
Amazon On Demand is not intended for computers. It is designed for the TiVo Series3/HD and now the Roku box, both of which are connected to an HDTV.
