I finally ended up receiving an email from a girl named Emily in the customer service/support department about this problem. Their email address is: iTunesStoreSupport@apple.com
After referencing this forum (to illustrate that I'm not the only one) they were finally able to resolve the problem by deleting those items from my queue. They did it "on the back-end" so there's no way I could have done it myself.
I hope this helps some of you.

Glad you got a solution, if it was a dumb, pain in the butt solution.
Maybe that Support person will "escalate" it so that they will consider adding the ability for the user to kill it in the future.

They responded within 24 hrs and fixed it.
They did warn however that as that application is in my purchase history, any new updates will be automatically added to my download queue if I use the "check for all updates" function. If I only select the updates that are presented I shoudl be fine.

iTunes/Preferences/Store, then uncheck "Automatically download pre-purchased content".
Of course, the drawbacks of this are that you will need to MANUALLY download your content if you do this, so depending on how many shows you regularly download, this may be MORE of a pain the stopping the ones you don't want.

I don't know what this means...the show was $2.99 and there was no option for 'low res cheaper'....it downloads both HD an SD... and right now iTunes says it's taking 2 hours to download 4 shows in HD, all free, that I attempted to delete but when I relaunched iTunes there they were again...so I just deleted them and it said "if you want them later Check for Available Downloads"... so I quit (to prove a point) and relaunched...hey!...all back again! ... YAY!... So I go to itunes prefs and I UNCHECK "automatically check for available downloads"....and I delete them..and I quit... and VOILA... all the lousy shows I never wanted to see again are downloading again...and at the bottom of that queue is the one show I want, in SD.
So it doesn't do what it says it's going to do and all I want is a simple little checkbox in prefs:store that says "Download Standard Definition version only".
Why come home at 10 pm on Sunday when that's when the best shows become available to have it chugging along 10% through a 4 hr download session when the standard version takes 25 minutes and that's all you want. I don't even want to pay a dime less for SD.

Maybe you should read through all previous posts before responding. Only then will you fully understand the nature of the problem...

"I purchased what was described as a "single episode" of the TV show "Glee" from the Apple iTunes store using my Apple iTunes account (the only way to purchase) on Nov 2, 2009. Without my knowledge or permission, Apple signed me up for an involuntary download of every single episode for as long as the show runs! There is no information in the Apple iTunes Store on how to stop this unwanted download. A search of the internet reveals many, many people have complained about this problem. The only resolution is to contact Apple Support and talk to a representative. The representative will do a manual "back-out" and then attempt to obfuscate the issue by explaining that if you had selected the "standard definition" version of the TV show you will not experience a 9-12 hour download time for each version. The Representative will pretend to be surprised that you don't want to pay $3.24 per week (episode) for eternity and that you resent having your internet download connection taken over by Apple for 9-12 hours each week for something you never knew you ordered. Isn't this totally illegal?????"

Easy solution: start the download before you go to bed. When you wake up, delete it.
Done!

and iJoe, falling back on the excuse iTunes doesnt care is a bad way to cover up you not being able to admit other people bring up a good point and that you were wrong.

So every time I start up the iTunes store I have to remember to quickly stop the 7 TV show downloads that my 10 year son tried to download 2 years ago before I go over the 200Mb limit in short order.
So just let it download and delete it option would have bad consequences for me. Very annoying that we cannot have control over this process.

Can I do this? Does anyone know how to end this nonsensical situation? I'll stop downloading any free things, and definitely won't download paid things if I have to deal with this craziness.
thanks!
Let each HD program start to download just a little bit, pause and repeat for each HD program you don't want. It will make a download file in your download folder wherever you are storing your in progress downloading files. Go there and delete the partially downloaded files and they will be gone forever.

This is a fantastic problem, really. Just awesome.
I'm having the same issue -- and none of these fixes work for me. Unchecking the preference, nothing stops the download.
I do notice there's a plist file in the downloads folder, though, I wonder if you leave that and delete the partially-downloaded files, if you have more luck?
