I want an iPhone bad, but there's no way I'm moving from Verizon to AT&T. I just have too many friends and associates that have iPhones that I constantly see losing the provider, making an awesome piece of hardware, useless. Verizon has been spectacular in terms of coverage for me as well as customer support. I've had other providers, none so far have measured up to Verizon. So I'm quite hopeful that this deal goes through. I'd purchase an iPhone in a split second if I could stick with Verizon.

Why wait? I have my iPhone running on T-Mobile and the service beats anything by either AT&T or Verizon.

Aside from the fake-moustache 'silly' questions, how about one that didn't get mentioned: Is Verizon willing to dance to Apple's tune this time around? And I'm not talking about revenue-sharing agreements, but things like visual voicemail infrastructure and control over handset functionality - items that were supposedly part of the reason Verizon first turned Apple down during the iPhone's gestation. One rumored reason the Blackberry Storm doesn't have WiFi is because Verizon pushed them to leave it out. Have they decided to let go of the traditionally tight control they've exercised over handsets?

There's a link to the original BusinessWeek story in the article as well...

>But actually making a deal with Verizon isn't what Apple's after: it just wants to bluff AT&T into folding its hand.

What, like their talks with Intel back when they were on Motorola processors, and Motorola was falling further and further behind the competition? And how we found out that they had fully operational Intel-compatible iterations of OS X as a contingency plan for years before they made the announcement and the jump to Intel?

I think it may be extremely premature to be predicting what Apple is ultimately after here.

Yes, VZW does love to control it's handsets. It gets to the point where all the phones are essentially the same (as far as menu and services go). If you know how to use one, you're likely to know how to use the rest. The "outside" just looks diffrerent. Of course the Blackberries are a bit different. I should mention I have VZW and have great signal.

I have VZW and I have an iPod Touch (so I can only email if I'm on WiFi). I would get an iPhone if it came to VZW. I was going to get a Blackberry but then VZW informed me that they did not have WiFi capabilities and that was a deal-breaker. I stuck with a flip phone. I do tend to be the one with signal in most places.

It's vaporware from Verizon hoping to keep people from leaving to go to AT&T because of their own dismal handsets and the spectaular failure the Blackberry Storm has become.

They're in talks with Microsoft to do a phone with Win Mobile.

There is zero chance that Apple is going to go Verizon. And even if they did, I would not switch. They are a bad company that purposely blocks Bluetooth so you can't move files to and from the phone without using your minutes.

The other thing is CDMA is a dead end. Apple is not going to develop a photo compatible with it, and Verizon's LTE is not going to be for voice any time soon. For several years it's going to be CDMA. So, no iPhone for Verizon.

I'm surprised so many people are falling for the old Microsoft vaporware trick in this day and age.

I only glanced over the article, so I might be neglectful with my comment. With that said... the author talks about no chances of going with other carriers other than AT&T, his obvious statement with Verizon.

However, in Europe, from what I understand, iPhones are already being used with Tmobile, and NOT hacked iPhones. So why would it be an issue in the states?

If you read the article, you would understand why it is about Verizon specifically. Really, it shouldn't take anything more than the opening two-sentence paragraph.

Umm... okay... I'm going to ignore Himb, who's seemingly only true
intent was to but to merely flame. Regardless if I skimmed the article - it did in fact talk about
other carriers such as Tmobile and Sprint.

QUOTE: "+Verizon’s certainly a likely partner enough. It’s not as though Apple’s
going to jump ship for T-Mobile or Sprint, neither of which can match
the heft of Verizon or AT&T.+"

My
point was in fact is in relation to the article - pointing out there
shouldn't be an issue with Apple supplying other carries. As my
example pointed out - Tmobile already has an agreement with Apple using
iPhones in the parts of Europe, so why would Apple need to "jump ship" for any one carrier. I think the iPHone is successful enough for several carriers to use the iPhone.

Just because the article may have been primarily about one carrier doesn't
negate the fact there are several dozen carriers out there, world wide,
of which, others already use the iPhone besides AT&T - and others that are just as antsy to jump on the iPhone band wagon.

Hmmf!
