I have 2 mac computers, both have OSX 10.5 on them. I'm trying to connect the two but it won't let me. Everything is set for sharing and each computer recognizes the other, but just will not connect. I had no problem connecting using Tiger 10.4. It's just since I started using 10.5 that I've had this problem.

Any suggestions? I'm using Airport on both macs which really doesn't matter since they both see each other which tells me they are making a connection. I just can't mount the drives going either way.

What exactly is not happening that you are expecting.

For example, sometimes my students get stumped when the icon for the connected drive does not show up in the sidebar of a finder window. This is usually because another student dragged it out of the sidebar and as a result the Finder preferences get changed not to show that drive in the sidebar in all future connections. I have to go back into the Finder preferences and set the sidebar to show all connected drives.

Just curious exactly what you mean when you say "...it won't let me" and that it "just will not connect."

Both sides say the same thing, connecting then eventually comes up with unable to connect. Doesn't matter which mac I try to connect to, they both do that.

I used to be able to mount one HD from say my desktop on to my laptop and exchange files back and forth. I can no longer do that with OSX 10.5. When I go to connect, it shows the other HD, but fails to connect. I've tried from the desktop to the laptop and visa versa. I had no problems connecting the macs with 10.4.

Try connecting the macs with a firewire cable. Restart the mac that you want to mount and hold down the T key while it is starting up. The mac should display a blue screen with the firewire symbol on it. The other mac should mount a firewire drive on the desktop. If you go to Apple support website, just search Firewire Target Disk Mode and it will give you instructions.

The target disk mode thing is a good workaround.

A would suggest trying the first three things here to see if that helps.

I am not sure why the connection fails. You are certain that file sharing is selected on both computers. When in the Sharing System Preference pane, under File Sharing what are the options selected? That is what does it say under the words File Sharing: On (should also be a green dot by those words)?

For example, here is what mine says:

Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at afp://(left this part off on purpose).

And then click the options button on the bottom right. What is your setting there?

Mine is set for Share files and folders using AFP.

Maybe there is something there that may help us...

I have both macs set for file sharing and every option is checked. I've tried everything I can think of and so far nothing is working. I don't want to connect via firewire because the laptop is in the living room, desktop in computer room and both are connected via airport. As stated before, I never had a problem using 10.4. Just started when upgraded to 10.5. Don't know why that would create this problem.

What does it say under the words File Sharing: On (should also be a green dot by those words)?

Also, don't see any reason to have FTP or SMB sharing set up on the Macs. Also, don't think it should be the cause of your issue, but I would only have the AFP option checked.

I click on Go and connect, select the drive and all that happens is "connecting" then comes up with cannot connect or connection has timed out.

This reminds me of a similar situation I have seen in my lab.

Try this:

Go --> Connect to Server

In window that opens, type:

afp://other computer's IP address (For example: afp://10.70.102.33)

This has worked for me given similar circumstances. Now, I'll try to remember how (or if) I was able to fix it....

Do you have AFP enabled in sharing preferences under the options button?

I do have AFP selected.
I will try some more things once I get home from work later tonight. One way or another I will eventually figure it out.
I also can't print to the printer that is hooked to the desktop and yes I have printer sharing selected. All this happened when I went to 10.5. Even have the latest update for 10.5. Go figure. Everything worked just fine when I was using 10.4.

When I print, I now have to physically connect the printer to the laptop which is a brand new Macbook Pro. It even recognizes the Epson printer over the airport, but w/n print unless I physically hook up the printer to the laptop. Go figure. It's like nothing wants to connect through the desktop which is a silver G4.

If I boot up the desktop using the 10.4 drive and use my old laptop with 10.4 on it, everything will work. It's something different with 10.5.
