With Leopard you should be able to connect without the Go menu etc.
Simply click on one of the hard drives and in your left-hand menu bar (where servers etc. show up) you should have a heading for Shared Computers. You should be able to select the computer there and select Share or Screen Sharing and connect to the drive or control the computer via screen sharing after you put in the other machine's password.

I finally figured it out!!! I had to turn off my firewall. Even though I had it set to allow certain connections, it still wouldn't let me connect the 2 macs. I turned it off completely and it worked. Strange because I never had any problems with the firewall blocking me from connecting in 10.4.

I had the same problem, turning off the firewall fixed it.
Thankfully, AFP stayed ok even after I turned the firewall back on.
So yes, it looks like some failure of the Sharing settings to auto-update the firewall settings for AFP (even though an AFP line does show up on the firewall access list).
Restarting the firewall manually sets it right.
