Wait, you have to pay $50 every year just to sync the "free" iPhone app to the desktop app for which you already paid $190??? Am I understanding this correctly?

Yes, you have to buy the software, and then buy the YEARLY LICENSE for using the iPhone app version of the software for $50/yr.
Great if you're Daylite. Not so great for small business paying $50/yr in perpetuity.

The issue of a yearly payment has been discussed a lot. As a solo consultant, I find DL and DL touch INVALUABLE to my workflow and contact management. More and more I see people expecting developers to keep developing and upgrading products without paying for that value. In short, for a business- even a small business- that wants a robust mac solution to client management, DL touch is certainly worth 4 bucks per month!
There are plenty of less expensive and free options out there if simply looking for a "to do" manager. Among the many things DL Touch does well, having each contact's recent emails available when out and about is worth it alone.
Just to be clear, I have no relationship with them other than being a satisfied user (used to be a dissatisfied user and tried various other options, but have now come back).

If you don't pay the $50, Daylite Touch quits working.
The issue isn't paying for updates when they come out. The issues are paying for something each year even if significant changes aren't made and having something you paid for stop working because you don't pony up each year.

There is no question Daylite is an awesome app. But it really is now for company's and not for individuals. So yes, that means it affects me, a user since day one.

Hmmm, let's break it down, shall we:
$50 per year
$4.17 per month
$0.96 per week
Given a 5 hour day (I'm being generous here - most people work 8+ hrs/day), the total hourly cost is (drumroll):
$0.04 per hour
Now, if the hourly rate you're charging your clients is so low that you can't afford this, then you've got bigger problems.
And if you're not using it for business, then if this cost doesn't justify the savings in time and added improvements in productivity, then obviously this isn't an app for you to begin with.
P.S. I spend more on junk food and coffee a WEEK than it would cost me yearly for this app - I'm sure the same apply to most of you.
P.S.S. Oh, btw, recurring fees can be expensed for tax purposes for businesses - you can't to that outright for software purchases :)

Um, no... :P

Regardless of what the actual daily cost is, or whether it's deductible or not, that still seems like a hefty fee for what it does, particularly when the desktop software doesn't really fall into the "budget" category.

Okay - this is all about ROI folks - if this program is not helping you build and manager your business so you are gaining way more than $50.00 a year then don't buy the darn thing! Daylite sells for 190 with a $50 a year subscription. Let's say you get one more client because you are managing your pipeline more effectively? That ought to make the investment worth it. If you are not using it for CRM and the project management portion of this is not saving you on the bottom line - DON'T GET IT IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR YOU. If you buy it and don't get the return then it's your fault... not MarketCircle's. That being said - Marketcircle still has work to do to make this even better but as it is it is pretty awesome!
You know I am a old Microsoft Guy and for the most part Mac People (and now I have PASSIONATE TOO) - yet you have no clue of the costs of software in that world. It is great there is a lot of cheap good software for the Mac and Iphone.. but I see people complaining about the cost of a 1.99 app and just laugh. Yes there are some rip offs but for the most part - most apps provide some value... anyway - relax you don't have to buy this one LOL
