Good article and really points people in the right direction. But as stated here, has limitations. There are some things Actions simply can't do.
I've found that though the learning curve at the start is high, Applescript and Photoshop together make a very powerful combination. Throw in Script Debugger and you've got a powerful tool for doing all sorts of things. You can even use Applescript to control the history pallet. Which is an amazingly powerful tool.
In fact, I'm thinking I might start writing custom Applescripts for people to control Photoshop. Actions are great, and people actually sell those, why not Applescripts too?
Macs are so much better than PCs. :)
