GPS relies on a satellite in space to locate a specific phone. The iPod Touch can currently triangulate it's location based on WI-Fi signals. That is a bit spotty. Last I checked there are plenty of stand alone GPS units that don't rely on a carrier.

and just how could the iPod Touch support GPS? Do you have WiFi in your car? Triangulation using mobile phone masts is very hit and miss. GPS needs a good stable and strong signal to transmit or receive co-ordinates and that can only be provided by your carrier and a contract.

The iPhone is a FARCE.
I am a Mac user since 1986 and drooled when the iPhone was originally released. A couple of years on and 2 updates to the iPhone later, and even though I live in the European Union, I still cannot buy an iPhone because Apple has not made an agreement with one of the carriers here in Cyprus. I also can't buy a carrier-independent one because it isn't available in my country.
Apple has alienated a lot of people by not offering it worldwide in a sensible way.

It's been specifically noted that the turn-by-turn apps from people like Tom Tom CANNOT use the Google Maps, which are licensed from other companies. So, TomTom must used their own maps downloaded to the device.Thank goodness for increased capacity in the phones, and most probably in the new iPod touches coming out later this year (I hope!)

Someone please help with this question: Will 3.0 increase the number of apps we can put on the iPhone?? I find 108 inadequate and since we can't delete the native apps, I'm out of space.

Well, basically no. The only was you could free up space is either by deleting some of your music and movies or just by getting the new iPhone 3G S on June 19.

It is fun to read the comments, as most of you folks are so more educated about these items and devices.
It is fascinating to gain some of this insight on the technical aspects to the devices that I use/own, in addition to the practical information that comes out of the discussions.
Most of the time, I so under utilize these capabilities that I actually learn how to maximize my usage of technology that is already packed into these gadgets.
Thanks for the education.

Does anyone know why it is that the Voice Control feature is not being made available to original iPhone 3G users?

It seems to be only a software feature that could be implemented on either the original iPhone or the 3G. What gives you think?

Just Apple trying to lure in one more way to upgrade? Or is there a real hardware reason why we can not get the feature with OS 3.0?

I have an 8GB first-gen iPhone running v2.2.1. I love it and all, but I was curious about a couple things. I know Apple's already stated that stereo Bluetooth and MMS won't be supporting on the original model, but will everything else be supported? I'm looking forward to downloading 3.0 when it's released next week. I'm tempted to upgrade (the 3G S looks AWESOME -- especially the 32GB), but I'm trying to get as much mileage from what I've got. I've got the App Store, after all.

Any other first-gen users out there? I'd love to hear people's thoughts on it and whether it's worth it to upgrade. Thanks! =)
