While I'm sure there are some of you guys out there, the majority of users use SD cards, phil said it- >1% of users used the slot. They'd rather make 999 million people happy than 1 million people.
And its not like you can't use those cards either- adapters are plenty available.

?Choice? between the SD slot and ExpressCard slot is a false choice. This is not a legitimate tradeoff. If some cheap little netbooks have both, there is absolutely no reason why 13? & 15? premium Macs can?t have both.

I think the fundamental point is that there isn't any reason why everyone couldn't be happy - if Apple had left it as an Express Card slot, those who wanted to read SD cards could have purchased an adapter. As it now stands, I have to toss my 3G modem and eSata card if I want to upgrade - all so I get an SD Card reader. I'd rather have the express card slot - I can read SD cards with an inexpensive card reader.

I bet lots of the general users won't even use the SD card reader and just hook up their camera using the supplies USB cable anyways.

Absolutely. There is no reason why there shouldn't be BOTH slots on a full size portable.

BTW. When I raised this issue over a year ago, the fanboys jumped in with their lame and contrived reasons why memory card readers are PC crap which is beneath Apple.

Firewire is better than eSATA. I'd like to see Apple include Firewire 3200.

MiFi is the way to go for 3G. It's a Wi-Fi to 3G router.

Speed! I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but a SD card slot could be faster than using a USB or Firewire adapter.

It's also a good way to sell software. It holds more data than a CD or DVD.

Come on guys, you are still playing into Apple Marketing?s hands ? begging the question ? by discussing ExpressCard vs SD reader as if it were a legitimate ether/or choice.

There is absolutely no f-ing reason that all full size MacBooks shouldn?t have had BOTH?two years ago (just like some cheap little netbooks).

And then there is the issue of why the reader is SD ONLY instead of multi format (just like virtually all readers on PC for the last couple of years).

SD card slot is not faster then USB as it's run on the USB bus.

That's a good point. Apple should be criticized for that. According to Apple "Your Macintosh has a maximum speed of 240 Mbit/s for SD media using the SD card slot. This exceeds the transfer rate of most SD media." So, there are SD cards out now that are faster than that. New cards will be even faster. It would be better if they supported higher speed cards. It sounds like they are taking the cheapest route.

well... it's the last step to finally turn the MacBookPro in the perfect teenage toy. I see in this forum that college and high school students are really happy because they can transfer their girlfriend's photographs much easier now Apple's got rid of that funny hole ... what the hell was that expresswhatever for- anyway!
seriously... it's really pathethic. I am keeping my Santa Rosa MBP and I pray to god that it lasts a couple years more. New MBPs were a pee over professionals' heads just for the matte screen and firewire removal but this SD<>expresscard tradeoff is a poo over us!!!! And it's just fun how people here talks about booting the OS over the SD card.... guys, it's USB inside my god! (and by the way I suspect then all USB ports are shared) ... What is going on?
