Most of these features (not necessarily what's here, but most of the features) were available when android first hit the market (or by cupcake). Apple really needs to get with the times, the android 1.5 release is better than the iPhone 3.0. Lame, apple really needs to do some serious work here.

Better in terms of features - Yes. Better in terms of UI - No (IMHO).

So, yeah, I think Android needs to get a new design team like Palm Pre.

Sadly, voice recognition for current iPhone 3G users is not part of the new iPhone OS 3.0 software. Instead, one needs to purchase a brand new phone! Perhaps someone at MW can ask an Apple rep, "WHY?" Very sad. Apple: We don't need to control our music and videos by voice command; that's nice, cute, etc. All we wanted was a simple way to dial hands free. That needed new hardware? Very, very sad.

With Find my iPhone I'm assuming you need to have location services on all the time? Doesn't that suck the life out of the battery? How does it work inside? Questions, questions- but it is a cool feature.

The new features are nice, but I wish Apple would devote a fraction of the effort it puts into design into quality control. On that front, it seems the iPhone is quickly becoming the Yugo of the smartphone world. I purchased an original iPhone back in Sept. '07. When the 3G came out, I passed it on to my daughter. She has since had to have it replaced after a permanent crash. The 3G I bought after standing in line for its debut was defective out of the box. I had to wait three weeks for a replacement. The replacement died in Nov. '08 and had to be replaced again. Now the earpiece speaker has died, so I'm looking at another replacement (or should I hold out and shell out $499 for a 3G S?). I bought my wife a 3G for Christmas and it died last month. The replacement Apple sent was also defective, right out of the box. In fact, Apple hadn't even released the hold on my credit card from the first "advance replacement" when they placed a second hold on the card to secure the replacement for the replacement. So, right now, having purchased 3 iPhones since Sept. '07, the defect rate is something like 200% (fuzzy math, I know, but it sounds good). If Airbus made planes the way Apple makes phones, there'd be 4 or 5 jumbo jets falling out of the sky every day. So why do I keep buying them? Just a sucker for a sleek shiny toy, I guess. That and I rely on MobileMe to keep my contacts and appointments in sync. But that's another story...

Android? Are you serious? Android is a convoluted mess. Who cares about features if the user experience sucks?
Android will be the Linux of pocket computing - a marketplace failure.

In all of this, has anyone noticed that the iPod Touch has had a fairly major upgrade with the 3.0 software upgrade? All second gen iPod Touches now have their Bluetooth enabled for A2DP stereo Bluetooth headset use, as well as for access to game accessories. Check it out here: .

Looks like a mixed bag (see: http://lifehacker.co...30-the-showdown ) and definitely not "Lame" on either Apple, Inc.'s nor Google Inc.'s part as you have stated.

I too am annoyed that the voice dialing is not coming to the iPhone or iPhone 3G. There is absolutely no reason why it can't. I fully believe that's just a tactic to sell more iPhones seeing as that was (in addition to cut, copy, paste) one of the most requested features.

WOW, I had no idea my iPhone 3G CAN'T make calls by voice command??? I thought I just hadn't taken the time to program it... I didn't know it wasn't available... but this is something I may NEED in this state soon.... I just don't get it, all phones should have this capability!!!! WHY can't my 3G iPhone accept voice commands?? This is old technology available on my TWO previous Motorola phones!!! (oldest phone dating back to 2004) WTF?!?

How is linux a failure? Linux is the best system out there, any computer person knows that.
And I personally prefer the freeer and more powerful interface and UI of the Android OS as opposed to the limited iPhone UI

I too was hoping for voice recognition with just the software upgrade, especially since I my corporation just got me an iPhone 3G in Febuary 2009. However since the phone is corporate owned I am going to see if I can upgrade to the iPhone 3GS. I agree that MacWorld should report on why it was not possible to offer voice recognition to iPhone 3G users via the OS 3.0 upgrade.

Part of the reason may be the list of languages that voice control supports, did you see it? ( http://www.apple.com...ce-control.html ) That's a long list of languages and alot of accents to support. Perhaps the current hardware could not perform acceptably in Apples eyes (either too much latency or so non-responsive they did not want to release it -- avoiding shades of Newton and the handwriting fiasco all over again?) I would say that I bet voice control works very well, after all what does Apple have all of those Billions for if not to develop great voice recognition not only into the iPhone 3GS, but also into the Macintosh.

Voice Control features support for the following languages:

  • Chinese (Cantonese)
  • Chinese (China)
  • Chinese (Taiwan)
  • Dutch
  • English (UK)
  • English (U.S.)

  • Finnish
  • French (Canada)
  • French (France)
  • German
  • Italian

  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Norwegian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Brazil)

  • Portuguese (Portugal)
  • Russian
  • Spanish (Mexico)
  • Spanish (Spain)
  • Swedish
