This idea of which platform is best or which is a commercial success is most time a very subjective question. to a devout Windows User Windows is the best. To a devout Linux User Linux is best. That includes my son-in-law. To a devout Mac User the Mac is best. That accounts for the rest of my family, wife, daughter, son, daughter-in-law & even myself.
In our opinion we know we are the only ones that are correct. But one thing you may be forgetting is that these not Mac Users are getting a lot of work done. Just don't assume that because someone doesn't agree with you that they are wrong.

I'm also surprised that voice control isn't included in the 3.0 software. I was hoping to remove the voicedialing app that I already use. If individual apps (Say Who and Google Mobile) can use voice control, why not 3.0? Maybe it's just a way of getting people to buy the latest technology. As it is, I'll have to wait until at least December to upgrade at a reasonable price by which time, other users will have road tested the phone for me.

A quick question about the Find my iPhone feature. I know that the errant phone can be made to play sounds even if set on silent; in a similar manner, can this useful facility be made to work even if Location Services is switched off? I ask because this is normally the case for me as it is a bit of a battery-drainer. Having said that, it wouldn't be to hard to leave it on so that Find my iPhone would work, although it would be good if I could leave it off.

I'm another iPhone 3G owner who is very disappointed that voice control isn't included in the iPhone OS update. I had that feature on my 3-year-old previous cell phone. It's evident that the hardware on the 3G can suppotit, because there are apps that can do it on the 3G. (However, they require you to look at the iphone to launch the app, push a button to start voice recognition, etc. - all the things that voice control is supposed to eliminate). So really, Apple, what is up with this?

I use Melodis Voice Dialer and it works just fine. I'm more concerned about the limited number of pages for apps. They have 50000 apps now, yet have not expanded the pages beyond 8, since you can't delete the native apps.
But, I found out today that 3.0 will allow you two more pages, to 11, from 9, so I guess that's a start.

I'm with you on that one. What's the point of having so many apps, if you don't have access to most of them at one time? Additionally, I wish they offered a way to organize them via itunes. (Just drag them in the order you want them in.) Melodis Voice Dialer? I'll give that one a try. Thanks.

I read this on the AT& T website: "Just dial *8 to activate, then say the name or number of your contact." What is the point of having voice dial, f you have to dial? Am I missing something here? Also, voice dial costs 4.99 a month. I'm confused...So, using an app to voice dial is free, but using the built in service costs a monthly fee? I have the original iPhone, so I still have that monthly package. This new one seems very expensive... You have choices in creating your package, but still rather expensive, especially for the service.... I love Apple..I love the iPhone, but wow! Apple bringing AT&T into our relationship has turned it into a BDSM situation and I'm not down with that....

"For all the "there's no voice dialing" whiners - that's what you read like to me - there's at least a dozen voice dialing apps in the App Store right now.
The Melodis product doesn't need a server - it works perfectly. Vlingo does need a server - it works perfectly, and offers more features. I use each on my iPhone and both are more accurate than the Nuance software on my Storm and all are equally easy to use. They're both fee-free, no charge, zero cost. Heck, even Google's app can be used to find a business or contact in your iPhone and dial it. Nuance doesn't have an iPhone product (yet?) - beat on them, not Apple."
Those third party apps will certainly not work as well as Apple's version, and they are not built-in to the OS. So, the main thing that will be lacking is the ability to initiate a voice activated call through bluetooth since the program is not always running an available as a system API. So if you have to tap on the voice app every time, it becomes useless since I can more quickly double click the home button and select a speed dial number. There is no doubt Apple's implementation will far exceed the usefulness and ease of the other apps in the app store.

I've been a MobileMe/.Mac subscriber for 6+years and have been very happy. The email and data syncing between my several Macs alone are worth the price to me. People may balk at $100 a year, but start dividing that between 2, 3, 4, 5 devices and the price per device begins to fall drastically. How much time does the service actually save you? For me, a ton.
