Is the iPhone's iPod feature perfect?

I would add to Spotlight 3 buttons:
1. History: Keeps track of my last 15 or 20 searches and the results that I picked, so to click on those results would begin the call or whatever action I did in the past.
2. Incoming: Spotlight would track in a single list all incoming messages, calls, and emails, so with one click I could launch the appropriate app. The order would be Chronological.
3. Today: A list that would track my calendar and ToDo's for today, one click and it could take me to that appointment.
With these 3 buttons Spotlight could become the best app on the iPhone, having everything one clink away and at the same time everything in one screen.
On Calendar I would add some sort of link to Contacts, so when an alarm goes off telling me there's a meeting it could popup a link to a contact that I had already added to call that person, better yet a birthday remainder alarm on Calendar, a popup screen saying "Your friend's birthday... make the call?" and a button to call that person. Instead of having to look in contacts to make the calls, to many clicks.

Please, please, please
All I want as a new feature on the ipod function of my iphone, all i ever wanted, is the ability to delete songs (or at least tag them as bad so I can delete them more easily later).
actually, also, i would love to be able to change the title, author name, etc, but more important to me is to be able to delete the songs that I have been sick of for months but never remember to remove from my device.

Smart Cover Flow:
On the iPhone or Touch, when you're browsing a particular artist (or a specific genre or playlist) and you turn the phone sideways, you are dumped into your entire library in Cover Flow.
If it were 'smart' it would display just the albums of the artist/genre/playlist you were browsing.
I feel like the lone nut on this ... tried to start a couple of threads at Apple Discussions a while back:

Doesn't anyone else think this makes sense?!

Ever tried to "scrub" back and forth through a long podcast and/or audiobook?
On the iPod, it's easy with the wheel.
On the iPhone/iTouch, it's horribly inaccurate.
That's my #1 complaint.
#2 is "Get more podcast episodes" often drops me to the generic "podcasts" section of the iTunes Store rather than the specific podcast that I'm already listening to.

i think the biggest missing feature has been added in the 3.0 software: the ability to access and control the media library from other apps. With apps like TomTom coming, and a bicycle GPS app I use now, switching back to the iPod app to change tracks or playlists is a pain. Just adding a next/previous/play-pause bar with a playlist pop-up to the screen would be (maybe literally, in GPS terms) a lifesaver.
Off the iPod front, add a Palm-style "Today" screen and a weekly view in the calendar would rock.

The best new iPod features to me are the playback additions. There is now a 30 second jump back button, a 1/2, 1x, and 2x speed, and easy to use half-speed and quarter-speed scrubbing to find a place within a song or podcast. Just touch the scrub bar, drag your finger down, and then scrub left or right to find your desired place in the song/podcast.

I second the smart cover flow option. I constantly switch into cover flow expecting this to be the case, and find it's my entire library without ever thinking.
I want to see Playlist Folders added so we can organize our playlists more efficiently. I can't believe they haven't added this -- just about every iPhone screen is a list that may be hierarchical with the ability to drill down, but all our playlists have to get dumped on ONE screen?!

The "iPod" portion of the iPhone is its weakest part (and on the iPod Touch, for that matter -- it'll be a sad day when Apple finally puts the Classic out to pasture).
The Now Playing screen in particular needs help. The information that would make me look at that screen -- artist, title, and album name -- are squeezed in in microscopic type almost as an afterthought. The album art is pretty and all (or often, the gray "missing image" music notes), but throw that on a screen of its own like the iPod used to do when it first got the ability to display artwork.

I am fully with you regarding the "on-the-go" and video management items. If iTunes (in the sync settings) and the iPhone would at least maintain the groups/categories present in icon view in iTunes, finding stuff would be a quite bit easier.
Other than that:
– Almost every iPod in the past was able to scroll titles horizontally if they are too long. If a title is cut off on the iPhone, you had it. If you tilt it to landscape mode you get CoverFlow, which is nice, but flipping the cover over gives you the same cut off titles. This is especially annoying if you deal with e.g. a series of podcasts only distinguished by a counter in the end like "Our very very very very very very very long podcast part 1" through "12". Opening the correct one is about impossible.
– Too few albums on the iTS come with PDF versions of booklets. The iPhone can display PDFs fine, why can't we sync and use them, at least the few we've got.
– The rumored CPU on the iPhone is 720p capable, why not support it. Encoding videos only once for Apple TV and iPhone would be nice. Even if the files are huge and if 720p playback would only work with power connected, with 32 GB now available, one or two 720p movies could accompany me easily.
– There must be a better solution for the timeline/scrub bar... hitting a specific point in audiobooks or feature length movies is about impossible. A virtual scroll wheel would be my favorite solution, as it could "rubberband" and accelerate/decelerate in a logical manner. Custom bookmarks would be nice too.
– I would love if the iPhone could display iTunes screens (or, even better, anything) over video out.
– Can we get something like a wish list or bookmark list for the iTunes and App Stores. Finding items again is painful...
– I would love a custom equalizer.

Just to play devil's advocate, here's why I like some of the things just the way they are:
1. The way On-The-Go functions is perfect for me. Not being able to change the order of songs in on the go was what held me back from getting an ipod in the past. Now I can easily fulfill the wishes of drunk dancers at after-parties without having to guess when a song is going to end! Just add it, and then drag it up. Once you get used to the new on-the-go system, it is quite useful.
2. I only include album info in my ID3 tags if I have the whole album, so coverflow functions as sorting by album, which works well. I have playlists, artists, songs, and genre at the bottom of ipod, so switching to coverflow is my 5th option. A smarter coverflow would alter this functionality for the worse.
It would be nice to be able to switch to and from shuffle modes or playlists with more options. If i'm listening to an album, and halfway through decide that at the end of the song currently playing, I want it shuffle my hip hop songs, there's no easy way to do that. I suggest an option where you can hold down a song for a second (like the old on-the-go system) and get an option for "start at the end of current song."
