The iPhone and iPod touch allow playing all tracks by an artist, but they sort the tracks by name and then play them in that order. I'd like to be able to listen to them in album order. I'm sure I could do this on older iPods I've owned.

Also, on the iPod touch when you delete a movie or podcast, it's deleted immediately. But on the iPhone, the item is only marked for deletion and is not actually deleted until the next sync. Why the difference when the two devices run the same OS?

Yes! I not only dislike the way coverflow shows the entire library, but just found coverflow annoying in general. I would LOVE the option (maybe in settings) of turning coverflow off completely. I think being able to tweak the UI this way would be great. +1 to mandog 202!

Not only are you not alone on this, but when the original iPhone came out, I filled out a bug report indicating that this wasn't the proper behavior. Apple responded that the cover flow mode worked this way by design. This didn't make any sense to me. If I selected a playlist and switched to cover flow, why should I see the hundreds of albums I have loaded on the phone instead of the few in my selected playlist? Cover Flow works as expected in iTunes so, at the very least, there is no congruency of design. I still think that this needs to be fixed.

@quayzar Can't speak for luomat2, but for me, yes, the scrubber bar is the problem. It works a little bit for me if the track is short enough?like a 3-minute song?but if you are listening to a 1-hour podcast, you can't slide ahead or back by any predictable increment. If you move your finger slightly to the right in a shorter song track, you will move forward by a couple of seconds. But if you move your finger the same amount in a long audio track, you go from 12:20 to 14:51 in the track, move it back two places and you've are at 9:47, move it ahead three and you are about 16:31, close enough to where you want to be, and then you remove your finger and it goes to 11:10 because you haven't released your finger in the exact proper way from the screen. The 3.0 update is supposed ease this pain a bit, making it easier to scrub more precisely in longer audio tracks.

agreed about smart cover flow...it's very disconcerting the way it behaves currently.
my biggest requests:
1) per-playlist shuffle settings, like iTunes. as far as i can tell, shuffle is on or off universally on the iPhone, even carrying over to podcasts. come on, who shuffles podcasts?
2) a play-one-and-stop setting for podcasts
3) live update of smart playlists
i have other minor peeves, but i'd say these should be among the first issues to be addressed.

I cannot understand why they have not addressed this in the IPhone or iPod Touch. A typical 2 hour podcast has about 20 minutes of good material. Using the click wheel you can surf easily and find the segments you like. Using the virtual scrubber on the touch screen is pure frustration. Also, the classics are navigable in the dark!

Until the iPhone/Touch's storage capacity meets or exceeds the iPod Classic's storage capacity, they will never be feature perfect to me. I hate having to choose what music I want to take with me and the limited storage is one of the big things keeping me from an iPhone. I want to be able to replace one iPod with another, not carry around 2 of them.

How about switching the shuffle by album/song on the fly like in the iPod classic? Or at least a way to switch in the Settings!

Almost perfect I think. I like the playlist ideas alot, but I would really like to see Apple implement something like Simplify Media into the iPod feature. Simplify Media 2 is a great app, but I would like the feature built into the iPod app on the iPhone. That way I could use the other features on the phone while listening to music from my iTunes. Maybe wifi sync too for both music and videos. I would use the heck out of some wifi sync for the iPod.

A couple complaints I've always had about the iPhone-iPod:
1 - There is no way to escape Cover Flow. I use a case that lets you tilt back the phone to watch videos. I can't tell you how many times I've set up the phone to watch a video, launched iPod, and I get Cover Flow. Really... how much trouble would it be to make the menu available in landscape mode so you could go to Video instead of having to grab the thing again? A small thing, but great things are built by paying attention to small details
2 - I listen to music by album. Why can't I do a 'Resume Playing' by album? If I last listen to track 6, watch a video, then go back to the album, why doesn't it start at track 7?
3 - This one may be solved in the new software... it's a real pain to try and accurately move ahead or back in a video. I've hit the rewind button and lifted my finger off the control when I get where I want only to have the video skip ahead about 10 seconds for no apparent reason.
To sum up... why did they do such a great job with the iPod standalones and such a sucky job with this one? Remember when Steve Jobs said 'This is the best iPod ever'?

The ipod on the iPhone is FAR from perfect. The annoying glitches that have plagued it up to ver 2.2 have gone away but there is a LOT of room for improvement. Apple needs to do some serious usage studies of the iPhone to see how people are actually using it. When it's on my dash and I've got it hooked into the car's stereo, it's very hard to see the name of the artist and song that's playing. It's also very easy to hit the wrong control. A new set of controls for the iPod, like a "Driving Mode" display and control set would be AWESOME. Also a control set for when you have it strapped to your arm and you can only see it in landscape mode... Apple, are you reading this? Whatever it is, I still need to be able to rate my songs on the go.

I wish Shuffle was a mode rather than a menu item. When it's time for some music, usually I'm itching to hear a particular song. So I go to iTunes, find the track in a playlist and double-click it. As most of my playlists are set to shuffle, the song plays and then iTunes goes into shuffle mode with the rest of the playlist. But I can't do that on my iPod touch. I can choose either shuffle for the list or I can pick one song to play, after which the remainder of the list is played in order.
I have a USB iPod-enabled car stereo now, so I can get around it there, but that's still my wishlist item. Well, that, and I totally agree that On-The-Go could be improved.

More focus on audiobooks, podcasts and multiple syncing!

In short my wishlist is:
1) Syncing with more computers
2) Bookmarks - remembering playstate of any playlist
3) iPod should remember playstate af sync
4) A list of recently listened to podcast/audiobooks
A more detailed explanation of why I find those points necessary is given below
I miss bookmarks and the ability to sync with more than one computer:
I listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks on my iPod touch - one of the most annoying things is everytime I sync it - the Touch forgets where I were in my playlists, and I am not always able to finde the right podcast again.
It is even worse with the audiobooks (which are not in the apple aac format - but insteade many mp3 files). Here it is almost imppossible to keep track of what the most recently played item was.
So one feature - the iPod should remember in which playlist and where I were in that playlist after sync. It may of course reset if that playlist has been deleted.
Furthermore - if I want to listen to something else - then it would be very convenient to leave a bookmark in any playlist which always can be accessed.
It would also be nice with a recently heard podcast/audiobook list - so one always can jump to the more interesting podcasts. Furthermore - as many of the podcasts are educational I would wish I could add notes to them.

Feature-perfect?! Where's the iTunes Visualizer for my iPhone? That's been a distinguishing feature of iTunes since SoundJam MP on OS-9! Stoners with iPhones want Visualizer! Maybe even an interactive Visualizer, which reacts to gestures on the display... Far Out!
