If another carrier gets Apple AT&T will be forced to do a better job.
The idea of competition should scare the f out of them.
If you cannot wait open another line. Do you have kids?
I will not wait.
I think that AT&T may just let people upgrade after awhile because they most likely want existing and new people to have access to the phone because of their f up last year.

Yes, I will be upgrading.
I bought the 16Gb original iPhone a few months before the 3G became available. A month later, I dropped it and cracked the screen. It was only one crack going through the middle. The phone still worked and I have been using it that way since. I considered replacing it with a 3G, but the new features and the reduced battery life weren't enough to convince me. Now with all the features of the 3Gs, It's worth it now.

I'm not upgrading; I have to wait until December 12th to get the fully subsidized price. If I can wait a half of a year, I'm sure that I can wait another half of a year for the model that will follow the 3G s. By then, I'll also be free of my contract, so if that model is supported by other carriers, I'll have the option of switching carriers as well.

I am absolutely upgrading, because I still have a first-gen iPhone. I actually considered still keeping my first-gen, because I love the aluminum case (I wish Apple never went to plastic!) and it's been my trusted friend for almost 2 years now, it's battery is still as good as it was when new, and I LOVE IT!
But, then I want to shoot video and have the better 3MP camera, and I was holding out for a faster processor anyway, so Apple was telling me something... Anyway I'll probably upgrade in another 2 years... that seems to be a sweet spot...
For all those who waited to get an iPhone till the 3G came out, this is Apple's way of saying "you should've bought one when we first released it..."

Ordered mine on the 10th, it was delivered at 9:50am. Now to just get home and hook it to iTunes!
I've had almost two great years of original iPhone use. Battery still going strong too. I look forward to my next couple years. Perhaps by next time, I'll be able to untether from at and t. Good riddance to bad love!

I'm still using an 8GB first-gen iPhone that I bought in Dec. 2007. It's still an awesome device, especially with the software updates. I was glad to hear Apple planned to optimize 3.0 to work on our "old school" models. The new features are nice, but I've lived the last 18 months without MMS and I don't really miss it, so not a big deal to me. the faster network would be cool too, but I don't mind EDGE, as I'm smart enough to not open Safari unless I'm either REALLY bored or at home with my Wi Fi network. New hardwaare is always cool, but the iPhone's software is what makes it great and I still have access to 95% of it all, especially the App Store. That's the real killer app on the phone.
My contract expires in December, so Im anxious to see what Apple does with the device between now and then. Maybe they'll add some more features (software-wise) that I can enjoy and/or I'll wait until next year for the next refresh.

I actually took the dive last year and upgraded to the iPhone 3G when it came out. Since my upgrade date for Rogers AT&T wasn't until November, they gave me a pass and allowed me to update at launch. The sad part about this was that I got bored with the phone after just a couple of months since I already had an iPod touch from when before. The even sadder part is that I went to Spain and I lost my phone, so I called Rogers back and they gave me the choice of purchasing a new one with the loss discount. I asked how much that was they said $600+ Cdn. No thanks I cut my losses and got a new Blackberry Curve 8900. I'm sticking with that one until the Palm Pre. arrives at Bell. I'l lhave to wait and see if it's really worth it, I might just keep my BB8900 for now until my contract runs out. Unfortunately in Canada due to our monopolistic laws we're stuck for 36 months on wireless contracts. And the money spot is $400 ECF if you can sell the phone righ away for $400 then it's ok, or $200 after 26 months which the company will allow you to pay $20 a month for a maximum of $200. I think after my BB8900 I'm just going to go Pay-as-you-go cause it's too expensive here for too long a time. If they (telecoms) were subsdizing the hardware for $19 for 36 months contract then it would be ok, but $199 for the 36 months is trash. I would gladly pay the Apple tax in Canada which is usually $100 more, so $299 for a 16GB iPhone 3Gs and only do 24 months, but Rogers the only GSM carrier in Canada says NO.

Pre-ordered a black iPhone 3G S from the Apple Online Store, got it in the mail this afternoon. I was upgrading from the original iPhone, 18 months into my contract, so I got the lowest price (which at $300 is still pretty steep). I went for the upgrade for the better data speed, the voice control, and the GPS functionality. The new features should all prove useful when I'm on the road touring the country with my blues band this summer; hopefully I won't have to pay for Wi-Fi too often.
My mom gets my old 4 GB iPhone 2G if she ever decides to learn how to use it.
