Well, you are using an illuminated display as a replacement for printed paper or plastic. On top of that, the display is behind a sheet of glass, not on the very surface, creating focus issues. Scanners are obviously optimized for printed material, so what exactly do you expect?
Neat idea with this app, but MANY technological hurdles. Until scanner manufacturers adapt their hardware to deal with iPhone-type displays you definitely will encounter issues.

Let me guess: You also have a t-shirt with the words "Shopping is my life!" printed in big, bold letters.

Be nice now.
As a frequent traveler, I have membership, reward, frequent whatever cards for multiple airlines, hotels, rental cars, etc. It results in a wallet that would make George Costanza jealous.
This would be a pretty brilliant idea if the scanning glitches could be worked out, but I agree, it's probably a losing battle technologically and I'm not nuts about handing my Touch over the counter.
Might have to give it a try and see if I can eliminate some of the non-scanners though.

i never carry cards. most of these places can just punch in your phone number, and you're done. Some places let you plug your own number in the debit keypad.
Seems like a difficult solution to an easy problem...

Here in Canada, already in one day two merchants have refused their loyalty cards on CardStar. I think it's shortsighted. I mean, isn't this what PassBook is all about? And I hear we'll be paying with our phones in the not-too-distant future. So will merchandisers accept payment from your phone but not their own loyalty cards?
My perspective is this: if they don't like the way I present their loyalty card, then they don't really need my loyalty.
