if http://you... invest the time and effort http://in this... intricate game, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more rewarding experience.
Yes, there are only 24 hours in a day, and playing a game for 20 of them would naturally drive out everything else.
Is this a promise or a threat?

Thanks for the detailed review, Peter. You know I have been waiting for it! So are the extras in the Retail package worth the extra money?

I enjoyed playing Eve as I worked to build up my ship and explore space. That is until the day a player insisted I pay his blackmail and when I pleaded that I was a noob and didn't have the means, he blasted me to dust and everything I worked for was gone in an instant.
For those who love the PvP factor, and have a stronger constitution than I, Eve is amazing, even before this update. For old time MMO players that like a little more subtly and safety in their games, beware, Eve is not for the feint of heart.

Yes, it definitely helps for the new player to get started. The most important thing in my mind is what CCP calls "Instant War Access" -- it sets you up with a factional rating as soon as your training period is over, so you can hop into the big combats that make EVE fun that much more quickly.

Great review Peter! I have noticed that Apocrypha is the most unstable build/x-pack so far, but it's by no means 'buggy'; I've only had a few spinning beachballs since I've upgraded last week (I had taken an EVE sabbatical for almost 6 months).
For those burned out on WoW, give EVE a shot. Asking a fellow gamer how EVE compared to WoW, they replied (I think it might've even been Peter that said this), "EVE makes WoW look like Minesweeper." They weren't kidding.
EVE does require some time investment, and the learning curve is steep. But it's well worth it. And reading up on some possible upcoming features (leaving your ship, entering a planet's atmosphere, etc), EVE is only gonna get better.

Couldn't agree more, Jay. The secret to EVE is the realization that it is, by design, something that will appeal to few gamers, even though seasoned with years of WoW, City of Heroes, Everquest and other MMOs. It is very much a niche game, and that's something that CCP, to its credit, seems happy with -- when I've talked with them about whether they'd want to "mainstream" EVE play they've said no -- that it would ruin the experience for the loyal players, and I think they're right.

Having said that, I think there are key areas where CCP can still do more to appeal to new players. Like I said in the review, giving noobs a vehicle to join a player-run corp. -- whether it's EVE University or one of the many other corporations in the game -- would definitely get players "over the hump," so to speak.

The shortcomings in the Mac version are a tougher issue. I recognize that CCP has cut out TransGaming's work for them in a big way. Unlike a game like Jade Empire or Spore, TG is never dealing with a finished code base -- EVE is constantly evolving, and CCP is constantly tearing out big chunks of the game's underlying engine to make it run better. I recognize that Mac users make up only a small percentage of EVE players, but I really have to credit CCP with catering to them at all. They walked away from Linux support after a year, but their Mac development efforts continue to go strong.

One way or the other, though, for me, anyway, EVE Online remains my favorite MMO of all time. I've more or less stopped playing WoW, but barely a day goes by that I don't fire up EVE, even if it's only to queue training for my most recent toon (Otitis, an Amarr that I created specifically to play through the NPE -- and three months in I continue to work up his skills).
