How do I get it to do this? I couldn't find a preference to do it for me. My older ipod turns off after probably 20 seconds or so.
I would like it to turn itself completely off after say a couple of minutes of no use. I was traveling recently and I went to use it to check my email and contacts list at a hotel and the battery was almost dead. It may have accidentally turned on in my luggage.

Thanks smax,
I am guessing that it does not completely turn off but just goes asleep, because it is more like a computer in that it does more than just playback music like a regular iPod.
So if it turns on accidentally in my suitcase for instance if it butts the on button against something then it will run the battery down.

The only way that I know to "completely" turn off (and even then, I do not know how completely it is off...I think pretty, if not completely, completely off) is to hold down the power button for like ten seconds or so, if I recall correctly (my Touch is in the other room and I am too lazy to go get it at the moment).
But, yes, if you turn the auto-lock on, it will turn off the screen but keep doing anything it was doing (such as playing a song or downloading content). If it is not actively doing anything, then it is kind of "asleep".
If you have it in the auto-lock mode and the screen is off, then it should not stay on if the power button or home button gets accidently pushed...the screen should power down in a few seconds or so...unless the button gets pushed again. To get it to fully power back up from the auto-lock mode, you have to do the finger slide bit. If one of the buttons is constantly getting pushed, then it will stay on and run down the battery...the only way to completely stop that is to protect it from having the buttons getting pushed (or maybe to completely power it down like mentioned above).
