I have an iMac G5 1.8 running OSX 10.4.11 and suddenly the computer won't recognize something plugged into the ethernet port. The computer and modem were off and unplugged for a couple of weeks. When I fired everything up, all is good except this. The ethernet light on the modem isn't on, pages don't load, and when I run the network diagnostic it tells me nothing is plugged into the ethernet port. I've restarted numerous times (both computer and modem), tried a different cord, and yes, even jiggled the cord a bit. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the modem, how old is this modem? You should be able to contact your ISP and get a new modem. If your modem is recent, then I'd tried restarting and unplugging everything possible, waiting 30 seconds, then trying again.

Have you tried a different computer with the connection? This would help you determine if it is the computer or the connection/modem.

I've tried a different modem, one that I know works on another computer, and the CAT 5 cable that goes with that modem and it didn't do any good. The computer is still not recognizing that there is something plugged into the ethernet port. Then I did a Preserve and Re-install of the OS going back to 10.4 and that didn't work either. From the install disk I ran Apple's hardware test and everything checked out okay, but still no luck.

Have you tried networking with another computer?
