Anyone know why every update of Safari requires a full reboot of the OS? Not a huge deal, but it is kind of annoying.
A Safari update is usually also a WebKit update, and any application on Mac OS X could be using the WebKit. Off the top of my head: Finder, Mail, iChat and Safari.

I hope this helps. Although Chris Breen reminded me the app alone does not encompass the changes updates make elsewhere (like WebKit), I have on occasion reverted to earlier copies of the app alone when version 4 gave me too much trouble, One of the sites that has often brought Safari 4 to its knees is the Wall Street Journal online.

After installing it and using it for the afternoon, I cannot comment on every issue, but there is one area I visit (password-protected) with simple HTML (no javascript, flash, or java - just DIVs and text) that still causes Safari to act unstably (I know, not a word) where 3.whatever performed admirably (as do other browsers).
I was soooo hoping 4.0 would finally work as well as 3.x. I would report the bug to Apple, but it is a password-protected admin area and I will not send the source code or screen shot of the page(s). The issue is 100% repeatable (occurs each and every time I go to the page) - at least on 4 macs (mac pro, imac, mac mini, and macbook pro) I use.
I even tried reprogramming the page, just to solve the problem - no luck. Safari 4.0.x, unfortunately, needs some more time in the oven to be considered functional for business use, at least for my company. Yes, I know I could strip content out of the page and submit a bug report, but at some point, I am not willing to waste time on the issue for free. I am past that point. Time to get used to Firefox again, sad day....

I wish it was amazingly fast. The beta version seemed to cruise along. 4.0 did not. Clicking on a bookmark bar item resulted in watching the spinning gear spin for a much longer time then I have been accustomed to. And 4.0.1 was no better; and, in fact, seemed slower. Mind you, not every address. Now with 4.0.2, the browsing is just a cumbersome with certain addresses, for example going to Version Tracker. Then to MacFixit. It's awfully slow and I have no idea why. So when someone says it's amazingly fast, I wish it was for me as well.

I. too, am experiencing undesirable issues with 4.0 and kin. This is ironic, but I am relieved to discover how many others are dissatisfied with 4.0 etc. 3.0 performed much better for me than 4.0 despite all the promises I read about that promised better performance. I am experiencing the exact opposite. Wondered if Norton's Anti-Virus is contributing to the off-pace browsing. Or is it security "improvements" that are influencing/impeding/slowing down/dragging performance. I spent more time watching the spinning gear. 4.0 has become clumsy in my experience. What to do?
