I would like to get a 3GS but I'd like to know if I can sync this as well as my current 3G to one iMac and just one iTunes account. Three questions:
1. Is iTunes able to treat them as totally separate devices and back them up separately?
2. Where there are conflicts can iTunes detect this? An example, I change a calendar entry on my 3G then I change again that same calendar entry on the 3GS.
3. Can I have different applications on each phone, irrespective of whether I purchased them on iTunes App Store or through the phone?
Some extra info: Both phones will have their own SIM cards but have the same telephone number.
Thanks

I don't really get how you have the same number (I assume they both ring at the same time or something?) strange, but whatever.
For this, I'd suggest you manually sync everything so that you can determine what for what phone- however iTunes currently lacks any good sorting device, like profiles or something for each device.
I'd suggest actually not getting an iPhone, but that's another discussion lol.
I know for sure this will work- as many people sync both an iPhone and iPod Touch.

You can get up to 4 SIM cards with the same number from the telcos here. Each SIM card can send/receive data at the same time but in terms of voice calls only one can receive phone calls at any one time. To trigger which SIM to be the active one is simply done by keying in a 5 digit code.
