Although I followed the simple installation instructions it doesn't work. Tech Support doesn't know how to help on a non-Windoze machine. Wow...big surprise there!!

My buddy at work told me that the cable company we use for service (Charter) some how attaches the Ethernet hardware address to the account and their subsequent IP address, therefore not allowing you to simply change the cables to another computer or router. I tried the TCP/IP Options control to release the server but that doesn't seem to be working.

Any ideas on solutions or work-arounds? Isn't there a way to force my cable modem to recognize and accept changes like this?

I am using a Seimens SpeedStream 2614 along with Charter Communications and a 3Com Sharkfin modem.

Thanks...

First can you access the router, try the ip # for the router setup. If you can't then your Mac isn't set right. If you can then it's either the routers settings or the cable modem. Double check the router settings making sure they are correct. I'm sure you've proabably already don all this so far.

I think that you need to shut down your Mac before the IP will release it from your Mac's hardware address. They hook up the router. It should work. If not some routers allow you to modify it's harware address for instances like this. Then you enter your Mac's hardware address and the router will use it. I'm not sure if the speedstream has this option or not.

If it comes down to it you can call your ISP and ask them to release the hardware address, if you say you just replaced your computer and want to be able to use it with your cable service they may be sympathetic and do it free of charge.
