You can also just go to www.shoutcast.com and select the radio station you'd like to listen to (and choose the "your own media player" option, when offered).

my 3GS is not jailbroken, but if this were really important to me, I'd just jailbreak. I mean, this is a nice thing for people to know about, but wunder radio and pandora (to name my two favorite streaming apps) offers so many more choices than you get with this method.

I have been doing this long before iPhone OS 3.0. I set up my podcast feeds in Google Reader and listen to my podcasts in Safari in the background. The problem in the past was that when the foreground application required more memory it would often kill the backgrounded Safari. With double the memory in the new 3GS that rarely happens.

@JoeFJ: Podcasts are MP3 file downloads. They worked in the past. What 3.0 adds, as I understand it, is savvy in tuning in live streams.
@QCaddity352: I've tried Jailbreaking. I didn't really enjoy the experience and I think 99+% of all iPhone users aren't interested in it either. Hence this workaround.
@farlander: Nice shoutcast tip! One of my stations isn't in shoutcast so it's not a great option, but for Shoutcast fans it's a great idea. (The free Flycast app also builds in a shoutcast browser and faves.)

I talked about this recently. I'd like to see Pandora get a golden ticket to run in the background. (I'm sure everybody has their special app they want to run in the background though...)

"Once that’s done, save your HTML file up to that same place you can post Web pages"
So must you have you're own website to do this? or can you just save the webpage to your iPhone?

I'm 100% with you on the MLB app. Like you, I don't care that much about streaming other sources while I'm in another application, but I definitely hate having to stop the MLB stream to use other apps.

If your ipod/itouch is jailbroken you can get a free app called Backgrounder and run Pandora or anything else you'd like in the background.

I was interested in the Backgrounder app identified as working w/Pandora's radio. But when I went to App store, it did not find the program. Is there perhaps a different name?

They're referring to a "jailbreak" app -- it's unofficial and requires you to jailbreak your phone in order to install software that Apple hasn't approved.

For Jason Snell: You replied to my question about Backgrounder by noting it is "jailbreak" app for apps not approved by apple. Is that safe, and if so how is that done? Thank you
