I was looking forward to using this tip on my calculator, but nothing occurs when I click on the display screen using the recommended control-click or right-click. Any suggestions? I am running OS X 10.5 on an iMac Intel.

Thanks.

Try this in RPN mode:
10<enter>
128<Y^x>
<control click>
I get "10" as the result and "0" displayed in large type.
Can anyone confirm this?

Update: I went to normal mode then back to RPN mode and now I get the correct answer: "Overflow".

Nothing happens with mine as well. Tested on 10.5.8 and 10.6.

Ok, you have to be in RPN mode for this to work.

I only get a pop-up menu when Calculator is in RPN mode. Is that right?

Update: When I type <control click> the word changes from "Overflow" to the number "10". From then on "10" is displayed instead of "Overflow".

breun: that is correct. It only works for me in RPN mode.
By the way, I am using OS X 10.5.8 and the calculator 4.2 revision.

You mean you don't just make the calculator longer, thereby increasing the number window allowing for more digits? Pfft. Lame. Heck, use spaces, and have Calc span 2 grids!

Ok robb, thank you SO much for this article. Only as a result did I finally discover that in fact the calculator application WILL do RPN and WILL do scientific notation.

This is great. Wish I'd known a year ago.

Yes, because everyone should be using RPN mode anyway ;)

Even in RPN mode, the first control-click after most operations is ignored. You have to control-click a second time (or more) to get the menu.
