Forget it then. The iPod touch will never have a camera as good as the iPhone due to size limitations. The iPod touch is considerably thinner than the iPhone so it will never be able to accept higher quality camera modules. Lens, autofocus mechanisms, sensors, etc. take up room. With more room you have more opportunities to put in higher-quality but bulkier parts. You can't suspend the laws of physics.
I wanted an iPod touch with a camera too, but I'll accept a unit with a camera that's a step below that of the iPhone. It's just reality.

OK, but why can't it have a camera as small as the nano?

That's correct, the 8GB is last year's 2G iPod touch and so doesn't have the new processor or VoiceOver and Voice Control. It also ships with a headset that lacks the remote controls and microphone found on the 32- and 64GB models.

The nano has a video camera, but doesn't take stills.

And as an aside, I am aware that everyone wants a camera et al included in one device, but for me, call me crazy, my tiny, elegant, superb quality Canon point and shoot is so easy to carry around, I would never let itouch's lack of camera influence my decision.

You could also add an accessory iMac and get a whole lot of other functions. ;-)
For me the lack of a built-in microphone was the dealbreaker. It means I still need to carry a small recorder (or my old Palm Life Drive!) just to record. Crap ear buds don't do it, nor do other add-ons. For now, my original iPod touch will do. See you next year, Apple.
