I made a little movie with iMovie, saved it as a quicktime file and then copied (and burned) onto a CD. When I view the movie from the CD, the picture is very choppy, though the sound seems alright. (if I view the movie on the CD before it is burned, it's also alright). If I then copy the quicktime movie from the (burned) CD to the desktop, the video (and audio ) is fine. I have tried saving the movie in imovie using different formats, exporting to quicktime or idvd, without success. Shouldn't I be able to play a quicktime movie that I have created (in IMovie) from the CD that I have burned?

The movie is choppy from the CD because the CD player can't spool data quickly enough off the disc and into your Mac to play the movie smoothly. Your hard drive can move data much more quickly, which is why the movie plays smoothly from the hard drive when you copy it from the CD.
In order for the movie to play smoothly from the CD you need to compress it and reduce its size. For example, create a movie at 320 x 240 compressed with Sorenson or Cinepak.
