I triped and pulled my telephone connection that is in left side of my iBook clamshell. This loose connection sometimes allows me to get on internet but most times not.My dealer tells me it will cost $350 + to send off to Apple for repair. Currently I have shoved a plastic toothpick under the port to wedge tight the connection. That $ cost is shocking. One repair shop (Not Mac) said I could install a external USB port modem to my USB port and use that modem to make contact with my server. It would only cost $150.Are simple repairs (Port replacement and soldering ) that expensive ? Hey - I was doing the toothpick routine with my headphone jack... and that just stopped working. I believe there was a local (upstate NY) mac shop that was quoting me $40/hour. I probably need to call them again.
I'm guessing that if the traces are damaged on the board (as with my headphone jack) then that $350 is probably a whole new circuit board + labor. I'm not familiar with where that plug is in an iBook. I think in the iMac it's a separate little board.
