In order to get new photos into iPhoto you must reimport your entire library each time select to not import duplicates. Picassa handles this task with ease automatically scanning networked drives on startup.

I'm not sure what you mean about importing new photos. You can just drag the photos into the iPhoto window. That's about as easy as it gets.

What if you want to share a photo library on the same computer,
Does Picasa fair better than iPhoto 09?

To make this work in iPhoto you need to create an image file and store your library there. And then you have to manually load it before running iPhoto. (and eject it when you're done.) All so we don't get possible corruption of the database. Works, but would like to eliminate this step.

What are you talking about; you don't need to make an image file, where did you get that idea? I have five users and we've been sharing the same iPhoto library for years.

You can do it one of two ways. If you have a second drive put the library on that drive. If you don't have a second drive just partition your boot drive and add a second volume of say 100GB and use that. I do this to all Macs I setup and call this drive Shared HD. This drive replaces the useless Shared folder Apple puts under the Users folder. Now select that drive or volume and then select File->Get Info. On the Get Info window check the checkbox at the bottom that says, "Ignore ownership on this volume". Now everyone on your Mac can share whatever files are on this volume without worrying about who the owner is. If your wife adds a photo to the library you can edit it with no problem.

Whoa, there is Facebook integration, but it's not built in. Much like previous versions of iPhoto before '09, you have to download a plug-in.

Thanks for this! I've been looking for this feature!

Picasa has no support for Apple Events (AppleScript) or Services. You can't automate Picasa or create custom services like you can with iPhoto. That omission should be noted in the review.

For free services downloads: www.macosxautomation.com/services/download

The image file is an official Apple recommendation. Macworld also recommended it in an article.

I knew I could use a 2nd drive as that is also a recommendation of Macworld and/or Apple.

Shared folder "works," but could corrupt your database according to Apple so that's a no-no.

Not sure why I never thought to partition or why it isn't officially recommended (afaik) since it is just as easy as creating an image file in disk utility.

Here's the official Apple support doc on the subject.

The reason the external drive and sparse disk image are recommended afaik is because only one user can access the library at a given time on either of these. Does a partition function the same way in OS/X?

One other advantage of Picasa is it stores tags in the EXIF information in the file which other software (like Photoshop and the Finder) can access. iPhoto stores this information in a proprietary database.

One can use iPhoto and send to Picasa albums via a Picasa plugin for iPhoto which shows up in the export window.

Have whichever cake and eat it too!
