I'm almost out of hard drive space and need to use IMovie with an external drive if that is possible. I currently have a 1TB WD drive which has been working fine but I think I messed up by not formatting it to Mac OS only. I am in the market to purchase another external drive probably the 1TB LaClie and I am hoping I can format it and store all of the projects and events on that device for usage with IMovie so that I don't take up any more hard drive space. Is this possible and if so please walk me through it with best practices. I plan on using the fire wire connection but aside from that I'm all ears!!!!
thanks

ANY external drive can be easily formatted for your uses with iMovie or anything else.
If you have an Intel Mac, you can boot from a USB drive if you format it GUID. If you are sure you'll never need to boot from the drive, you 'could' just use the Apple Partition map to carry it over to a PowerPC based Mac, so that it can be read/cloned and used as a bootup drive for THAT Mac. You can even format it FAT if you want to connect it to a (choke, cough) windoze box. The Mac can read it all.
Anyway, LaCie, Seagate, etc., make many fine external drives.
You can price things via MacSales.com (OWC), Mac Zone, Club Mac, CDW, et al to get the best price (always factor in shipping as this can make a few dollars difference if you're really pinching pennies.)
Strongly recommend always buying an external drive that is FireWire capable. You'll be glad you did. FW blows away USB 2.0. ___ HENRY VIII VOICE: "People who tell you different are knaves and traitors, aye, traitors most foul - they are a canker on the body politic, AND I WILL HAVE IT OUT!!!!"
