SL menu bar cell phone mystery icon

Here's the situation:

When I plug my cellphone into my computer (via USB of course) a new little menu bar icon appears that looks exactly like an (empty) cell phone signal strength indicator. When I click on the icon the only menu item that appears is "initializing". This stays this way, no matter how long I leave the phone plugged in. This must be new in Snow Leopard or even in Leopard since this never occurred using 10.4. This is very strange because, although I have always charged my phone with my computer, there has never been any further interaction between the two (ie: tethering).

Interestingly enough none of this occurs when I plug in my girlfriends Blackberry curve.

What is this?!? Is this a feature that would be more active with a better/newer/not free phone? Does anyone see this behaviour with their phone?
