Bugs & Fixes: Magic Mouse loses its way

Ted and others,
Thanks for contributing your observations. I have been sitting on the fence about Magic Mouse. I tried one in the Apple Store and was impressed, but I did notice slow tracking with 27 inch iMacs. It may still be a good solution for my Mac Mini media player, where BlueTooth wireless range is a definite advantage over RF. I've been through four mice in our living room setup and, so far, nothing works totally as expected. My Logitech MX1000 came the closest to perfection until it went kaput.
Anyway, thanks again for the review.

This is why it is always wise to wait a while when Apple comes out with something new. You can bet they hear these complaints in Cupertino and will come out with a quick fix. In the long run, they'll replace the Magic Mouse with another model that will work better. I'm waiting . . . sounds like everyone should.

I've had mouse problems with my early 2008 Mac Pro. Basically, the tracking speed suddenly resets from its normal Fast setting to Slow, and then stays there until I change it back to Fast. This has happened with a wired Mighty Mouse, two wireless Mighty Mice, and now a wireless Logitech Revolution MX, so it's neither the mouse nor the Bluetooth. Maybe something in the mouse driver, or even, as one person said, possibly a weird conflict with the graphics card that's in it. (These problems seem more common with the Mac Pro, based on the responses above.) (It also doesn't seem to have anything to do with Wi-Fi, though I'm not willing to stake my life on this.)
The problem is extremely intermittent. Sometimes I'll go for weeks without having the problem, other times I'll have to fix it 10 times a day. It became annoying enough that I wrote an AppleScript to fix it, creatively called "Fix Mouse". If the mouse goes braindead, I can Command-space to bring up Spotlight, then enter "Fix Mouse" and have it working again in no time.
My script is below:
tell application "System Preferences" to activate
--delay 0.5
tell application "System Preferences" to reveal pane "Mouse"
--delay 0.1
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences" to set value of slider "Tracking Speed" of window "Mouse" to 9
tell application "System Preferences" to quit

I had the lost connection problem with my Mighty Mouse on my MBP. I had to turn the mouse off and back on for the connection to be established again. That problem stopped when I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I wanted to get the Magic Mouse, but now I'm a little afraid....

I'm glad to be reading this because I thought I'd try the new Magic Mouse. But I guess I'll stay with my wired mouse and keyboard. I found I can't use wireless keyboards because my typing speed is over 100wpm and they can't keep up, and battery life is an annoyance all the way around. I don't need to work so far away from my iMac that I need wireless products anyway. So I'll just stay comfortably tethered and avoid the frustration.

I don't know if it is related but, I have the same symptoms with my bluetooth mighty mouse at times. I have a late 2008 13" unibody MacBook and I back it up using Time Machine to a 500 GB Time Capsule.
When I am working during the backups the mouse track speed gets painfully slow and the unwelcome "connection lost" message comes up. These symptoms only seem to occur during the last 1/3 of the backup process and always self-correct when the backup completes.
I tried in vain to find a solution on the Apple Support Communities and finally gave up. I just assume that it is a question of interference and resign myself to it.

On several occasions when the connection has been lost or tracking has been erratic, I have turned the mouse over and noticed that the green light is out. I suspect that the problem is either a bad battery contact or some flakey electronic connections within the mouse. When I have some time, I will try to exchange it to see if I can get a more stable one.

Apple's blue tooth mice have alway been flaky, and power hungry. I replaced my Mac Pro Tower Blue Tooth mouse with a Microsoft Exployer 5 key, works great, and is RF. Same problem with my Mac old portable. Finally bought a logitech VX nano, uses a RF adapter that plugs into a USB port, work great on my PC, but on my Mac portable it keeps loosing the connection like my Apple blue tooths. In my experience Blue Tooth products are always loosing their connection. Pretty general problem with wireless anything. Nothing beats a wired mouse.

I am having a similar problem with a new iMac with Snow Leopard and my USB laser mouse. I often get a message that a mouse cannot be detected. I have to unplug the USB and plug it in again to re establish connection. I have used this mouse with other computers and it has been fine.

Just acquired a Magic Mouse. With my2006 Mac Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6.2) I find the scrolling to be jerky, and sometimes it takes a few tenths of a second for the cursor to come to a stop after I stop moving the mouse. Sometimes the cursor initially moves in the opposite direction before reversing and following the mouse. Basically it is unusable. Scrolling tends to be stick slip as well.
But--it seems to work better if I turn off my Airport Express, which is under the table. Problems are intermittent with Airport on 5ghz only.
It seems to work well with my wife's iMac, which is in another room (and running Leopard 10.5.8). I will be away for a few days, but am unable to persuade her to give it a weekend long test.
I think there is little doubt that interference from the router is the problem. I will try relocating the router nest week and see if that helps. If it doesn't, back goes the mouse to the store,
