Every one does not have a ipod or iphone. Many of the people who do have a one it is a gen one.( which still work)

You can use MakeMKV to do the same thing with both DVD's and your BluRay disks. That is if you have a BD-ROM drive (that can also write to DVD's - don't ask why). Anyway, this clever software creates an MKV file from your BluRay disk, and that MKV file can be read by Handbrake and converted to .m4v for use in your iPhone or iPod.

Oh. So by default users with an iPod 1st gen (and 2, 3 and 4G) don't find this article relevant since video features appeared first in the 5th Gen? Hmm... These ripped movies can be watched on their Macs, right? This article explains how to accomplish that in the first place.

Also don't for get about Mac DVDRipper Pro, its half the price of Ripit and works just as well. True the user interface might not be as nice as Ripit, but thats okay.

Handbrake is the most simple one I have used. I like to add chapters name to the movie.

That's a little literary device we like to call "hyperbole." It is not intended to be taken literally.

I have an LG GGC-H20L in an USB enclosure. It reads both BluRay and HD DVD as well as reading and writing to DVD's. MakeMKV does not really work with HD DVD's but if you have a few of those disks lying around, you can rely on Bootcamp, Parallels or Fusion and run AnyDVD and a great tool called Clown BD. Once I figured out how easy it was to rip HD DVD's I went out and bought bunches of them. Now that the format is dead, you can pick up movies on HD DVD disks for under $5.00 at Amazon -- but the movie is still 1080p and is indistinguishable from BluRay once it is ripped to your computer.

Half of the general population? Maybe.

Half the people that visit this site? Doubtful.

I"m more concerned with CDs, since my mini doesn't have a DVD player and I've stored valuable info on CDs. Does you information apply to CDs also?

Thanks, BreenBody!

I tried backing up a single BD title track with MakeMKV and HandBrake CLI. To do this, I reencoded for output to BD using the film preset found at http://tinyurl.com/y9vu4fk in the command string field of the 1080p method included with an Automator workflow, the instructions for which are available at http://tinyurl.com/ykpxj9z.

I was able to author to BD with a version of tsMuxer hacked for compatibility with Snow Leopard (http://tinyurl.com/ydl5wmg), but when I played back the resulting burned BD, I could hear sound but the screen was black. I presume that's because my TV only goes to 1080i. Is there a way to make this process 1080i compatible?

If you'll figure this out for me, I'll send you the smallest possible QT Library installer package (under 40 megs) that will make that hacked version of tsMuxer work in Snow Leopard. (I'll send it anyway, just ask) Thanks!

Mac the Ripper + Visual Hub (lamentably no longer being updated) = success with converting any video format to any other video format, with the exception of Blu-ray. For Blu-ray, MakeMKV + Visual Hub would be the answer.
