iMac(8,1) 2.66GHz Intel original 300GB Hitachi hard drive. OSX 10.5.8

I am trying to enable journaling using Disk utility but it refuses to play nicely, all I get is: "Journaling could not be enabled on the volume (imachd)"

The drive checks out ok with both Disk Utility and Tech Tool Pro 5.0.6 . I am 99% sure I had journaling enabled at one time. I have tried booting with both original system disk and Snow Leopard disk
because I read that will trash the original journal directory and allow a new one to be made. I have repaired permissions.

If anyone knows a fix please help.

I believe you need to be booted from another drive to do that.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply,I did boot from an external drive to verify and repair the internal drive, but I believe Disk Utility can only enable journaling on the current boot drive. At least the green "Enable Journaling" button is only available for the current boot drive... maybe it shouldn't be that way ?? I 'm not sure.
BTW I did try a safe boot also with no joy.

I'm thinking it is a Tech Tool Pro 5.0.6. issue combined with user error: I did a File and volume optimization to make enough space for an eDrive but skipped the "surface scan " test first. Might have nothing to do with it, but that was the most recent thing before noticing the Journaling problem.

I'm really hoping I don't have to do a "Nuke and Pave"

Any ideas?

No, you should definitely be able to enable journaling from the boot drive.
