Check out Mac DVDRipper Pro (http://www.macdvdripperpro.com/). it's half the price of Ripit and it's about twice as fast.

"Why not just purchase everything you own again from the iTunes Store?"

And because in most countries outside the USA, the iTunes Store only sells music.

Most believe DVD ripping is legal under fair use laws, but it hasn't been decided in court yet. The MPAA have never pushed the issue - I believe because they are afraid the decision will come out in favour of the consumer.

*It’s an indisputable truth that where there are five-year-olds, there is jam, and that jam will find its way from the five-year-old’s fingers to every DVD you own.*

Best commentary I've heard from Macworld yet!

Forget the 5 year old arguments.

If you have a collection of over 500+ DVDs storage is an issue and a pain.
And not only that but having multiple TVs in the house makes it more convenient to rip and set up a media server.

I would agree that different media formats when from the studio are different product (aka B-ray is more than a storage transfer and adds content) but home users transfering to another media is NOT a different product and adds nothing more transfer capabilities.

Many Blu-rays come with Digital Copies, and there's also software to rip BRs on the Mac.

Since I joined Netflix, I find very little need to rip a DVD, or to even own one.

Between streaming and the mail, I can have just about any movie I want in a couple of days, so why would I want to fill up hard drives with movies I'm not likely to watch.

Kids are a different story. They like watching the same movie/show over and over and over again. And they are the ones with jam encrusted fingers. Travel is another good reason, especially with devices that lack a DVD drive.

On the whole, I probably rip less than 1% of the DVD's I watch. All of the DVD's I rip are one's that I own, and I probably rip less than half of those.

What would I do if I couldn't rip a movie? I'd probably buy a book or something else. I wouldn't spend the money on buying another copy of something I already own. I mean how many people buy the paperback version of a book, if they already own the hardback version, or vice versa.

I, for one, appreciate MacWorld's reviews of DVD ripping software. I would of never found out about RipIt.
As for the "nickel-and-diming customers" I agree. Moving from LP to CD was one thing, like moving from VHS to DVD but if all a sudden DVDs began disappearing from stores and replaced by BlueRay then I'm gonna feel nickel-and-dimed.

A friend rips handbrakes all her DVDs and watches them on her big screen via her iPod Touch. This has worked out great for her and she has seen no need to buy a DVD player for the TV.

However, she's a Twilight fan and bought four different versions of New Moon and handbrake cannot rip a single one of them.

With the original Twilight there was one version and it included a digital copy, none of the New Moon copies do.

She'll buy any movie she likes on DVD, but this experience has really soured her and she doesn't know if it's worth it to even continue buying at this point. I know she definitely won't be buying four copies of the next Twilight movie.

What about non-commercial DVDs? I have a DVD my brother had made of old 8mm family movies from the 1940s. I'd love to get the files off of the DVD and into iMovie for editing, posting, etc. The only tool I have found to do this for free is Wondershare Video Converter Pro, which leaves a watermark on the clips unless you pay for it. Are there decent free tools somewhere? It seems iMovie should include this function. And my Toast 10 Titanium seems to be no help either.

Thank you for continuing to present the information, and not censor yourselves or make our moral decisions for us. But, also thank you for presenting both sides of the argument so that we can make an informed decision. We appreciate it.
